Extreme Maritime Survival!

Short Attention Span Summary (SASS) of book one:

1. Twins escape horrid fate
2. Fate decides to give it another shot
3. They get separated at sea
4. One gets to talk like a pirate every day
5. The other's with a crew that sucks
6. Reunited, and it feels so good

Following right on the heels of Demons of the Ocean, "Tide of Terror" opens with a night surfer aggressively riding the waves of a deserted cove until the very waves give up the fight, depositing him gently on the sandy shore. Within a few pages however, we learn that this is no ordinary surfer, as the unexpected appearance of a brilliant moonbeam sways him from his intended mission.

Meanwhile, back on The Diablo .....

"Sound the cannon!"
A pirate attack
By eights and by fours
Time to plunder and sack

Victory cries
Soon silenced for good
An error of judgment
The target withstood

Following this great debacle, Connor and Grace (who are both aboard the pirate ship "The Diablo") have to make a tough career decision. Connor needs little convincing, but Grace feels her heart tugging in another direction, towards the Vampirate ship and Lorcan, the vampire who sacrificed his future to protect her.

A temporary respite is granted as the twins are permitted a one week all-expenses-paid trip to the Pirate Academy, where they renew an acquaintance and make some new ones. Despite his early misconceptions, Connor adapts easily to the Academy way of life, and impresses the tutors with his piratical prowess.

Meanwhile, on the Vampirate ship ......

Things are NOT going well.

Although this is a continuation of the first book, there's enough background information to make it possible to enjoy this even if you haven't read the first (but you really SHOULD read it anyway). Book two is a little slower, and more predictable, but there are both page-turning moments and dramatic twists, setting the stage for book three, Blood Captain.

Recommended for swash-buckling, blood-thirsty readers from nine and up.

Excellent Addition to the Series

If you were a fan of 'Demons of the Ocean' - and I highly recommend reading that prior to digging into 'Tide of Terror' - there are a couple of things to keep in mind about this second installment in the series. First, this story definitely focuses on Connor; both twins are aboard the Diablo, and Connor is learning to live the pirate life. And while Grace adopts a happy front for her brother, she misses the vampirate captain and finds herself constantly thinking about Lorcan. For me, the emotional underpinning of 'Demons' was entirely wrapped up in Grace and Lorcan; the vampirate's absence in 'Tide of Terror' sucks a little of that emotion out, but there's enough to sustain the story, and there's certainly the promise of what is to come.

Now, because both twins are in the same place for the majority of the novel the narration doesn't swap between them; this, unfortunately, does not lend the story the same sense of tension and urgency, but it doesn't detract from the need to consume the book, either. One of the best things about the Vampirates series is that you come to care a great deal about the characters; you want to know more, to follow them on their journeys, no matter what. After I finished this one I couldn't wait for 'Blood Captain' - it's really, really good, by the way - and now the wait until the next installment will seem even longer.

I've had great success recommending this series to younger readers; each one came back and asked for the next, which is surely a benchmark of Somper's success.

A thrilling ride!

Tide of Terror, the second book in the Vampirates series is a thrilling ride full a more pirates, action, adventure, betrayals, and more! For me, it was fast paced. Best of all, there was a little more about the vampirates although I would have liked to see more (and that is what the sequels are for).

Connor and Grace were together for the most part in this book, but you can see that they are destined for different paths. Connor wants to be a pirate. In fact, he excels at everything pirate related. He even has visions of being a captain in the future. Grace, on the other hand, longs for the Vampirate ship and Lorcan, her vampirate friend. That being said, she does some pretty crazy things to try to get back on the ship. From jumping into the harbor to taking "spirit journeys" to visit the ship. From Connor's visions to Grace's "spirit journeys," I am curious to discover if the twins have some sort of special powers that they are not aware of.

The only parts I didn't like were the few parts where I was like "Wow, that's lame." An example is when Connor and his friend, Jacoby, did a special handshake. I didn't think it was necessary, but then I remembered that Connor is only fourteen, so I guess it's okay.

Anyways, I can't wait to see where Justin Somper takes the story next. Tide of Terror was a fun book to read. It was a quick read that was just fun. I love the mystery the Vampirates present. I look forward to finding out more about the mysterious captain of the Vampirate ship. I want to know why he wears a mask, and who exactly is behind the mask.

About the Author
T.C. McCarthy earned a B.A. from the University of Virginia, and a PhD from the University of Georgia, before embarking on a career that gave him a unique perspective as a science fiction author. From his time as a patent examiner in complex biotechnology, to his tenure with the Central Intelligence Agency, T.C. has studied and analyzed foreign militaries and weapons systems. T.C. was at the CIA during the September 11 terrorist attacks, and was still there when US forces invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, allowing him to experience warfare from the perspective of an analyst.

Fighting in tunnels (with genetically engineered teenage girls)

This is the second military science fiction novel I've read in recent months that is told from a journalist's point of view (the other is Dan Abnett's Embedded). Germline is by far the better of the two: the characters have more depth, the battle scenes are more realistic (the emphasis is on survival rather than gunning down hoards of enemy troops), the plot is more complex, and the focus is on the internal damage that war inflicts on soldiers rather than the external bloodshed (although fans of gore and decapitation will be well satisfied).

Marines are fighting Russians in Kazakhstan, in tunnels and on the ground, to gain control of ores and minerals that both sides would like to mine. Reporter Oscar Wendell is embedded with the Marines, getting high and hoping to stay alive long enough to win a Pulitzer. Given a choice, Wendell and the Marines prefer to be in the tunnels (the subterrene) where, surrounded by rock walls, they're less likely to be shot or burned to a cinder -- unless the enemy tunnels into a chamber occupied by soldiers and fills it with plasma.

Fighting alongside (or ahead of) the Marines are genetically engineered teenage girls who move "like lighting on speed." According to Wendell, the Genetics look like killers but smell like they should be "sitting in school, driving guys crazy with a miniskirt." I have to wonder whether T.C. McCarthy threw them into the mix on the assumption that the majority of sf fans are young (or not so young) men who will enjoy reading about genetically engineered teenage girls who look like "a track team gone bad." Why not fight the war with genetically engineered teenage boys? Because boys don't smell like they would look good in miniskirts? We eventually learn that genetically engineered males do exist but, like so many things, they aren't American made. We also learn that American defense contractors don't make genetically engineered boys for reasons that (when they are finally revealed) didn't strike me as convincing.

Silly as all this sounds, McCarthy at least builds some interest into the factory-made girls; they're programmed to fight and die but they retain most human instincts (including, of course, the desire to kiss Wendell). Although the Genetics are trained to believe in "death and faith" and are designed to rot away after they turn eighteen (a less appealing fate than the glorious death in combat they are conditioned to crave), Wendell finds that he prefers them to human women, apparently because they are less complicated (a characteristic Wendell identifies as "innocence"). Perhaps too predictably, Wendall develops feelings for a couple of Genetics (unlike the Marines, who seem to be creeped out by them). There are echoes of Blade Runner here, with its replicants who want to continue living past their expiration dates, but fortunately Germline follows a somewhat different path.

There's more to this novel than fighting, but war pervades the story. The combat imagery is vivid and intense, making Germline rich in atmosphere. Germline is nevertheless at its best when the spotlight moves from war to Wendell.

Wendell's self-destructive tendencies make him an intriguing character. He's often fighting his own demons: his fear, his occasional death wish, his desire to tune out the war in a haze of drugs, his need for attachment to a female even if she isn't a real person. Wendell experiences personal growth (or at least change, for better or worse) during the course of the novel. He has a better understanding of his nature and -- as he comes to understand a Genetic -- begins to question what it is to be human when thoughts and personality are shaped by war's dehumanizing experiences. The last chapter contains some surprisingly strong writing about the aftermath of war as Wendell, like every combat veteran, realizes that he can never be the person he was before the war, that he must adapt to a new way of living. This aspect of the novel is very well done.

Germline is the first book in a series called The Subterrene War. I hope the others are as strong as this one. If I could, I would give Germline 4 1/2 stars.

Amazing!

First of all, it is not really fair to call the main character, Oscar, a reporter because even though the story begins that way, Oscar slips into the skin of a soldier with relative ease and remains that way indefinitely. This is not your typical military science fiction, not like Scalzi's Old Man's War, or David Gunn's Deaths Head (which I loved, but for reasons vastly different than this book) - this book is deep, and although it contains elements of the future, the carapace suits and plasma everything for instance, the fancy gadgets which many authors stick in gratuitously is withheld to a need to know basis. There is nothing worse than having an author ram their technology down your throat just to prove to you that they understand the science.

The best aspect of this story was Oscar's journey from drugged-out deadbeat to dead man walking. He is so unlikable and screwed up in the beginning he really has only two choices - live or die. He chooses life. I related to his indecision about leaving the war several times, but most of all when he was faced with either walking towards safety alone, or remaining in the fight with the Kid. You couldn't pay me a million bucks to make the freedom walk alone at that point either. I was with him 100%. Sometimes you know the enemy, and the enemy is you.

This is a fantastic character study of how thin the thread of sanity really is and an excellent read for all military SF lovers.

Not Good
By So many books . . .
This is the 2nd worst law school textbook I have had to buy (Federal Courts will likely never be unseated from the top spot). Very poorly organized, and the notes after the cases do more to confuse the issue than clarify anything. I understand this is Conflicts, a known tough class where "right" answers do not necessarily exist, but this insult to injury is unnecessary. The book provides no context before presenting a case. The E&E for this topic is very good - and much more organized and actually covers numerous topics in more depth than the text. The Kermit Roosevelt (who is one of the authors for the text) supplement (Conflict of Laws - Foundation Press) is good, and definitely clarifies things - and he definitely hits on the high points of the text (though some of the book is his talking about how he would rewrite Conflicts Laws - which is actually really interesting - but will not be on your exam). Though the way the textbook presents the Modern Approaches (in a more disorganized, linear/timeline fashion) is probably more accurate to the way the law developed - it doesn't help the learning process. For me the E&E provided structure and got me enough background that I could put the rest of the puzzle pieces together.

Disorganized
By Trust Me--I'm Almost a Lawyer
The subsections of this text book do not correspond with the associated cases. There are subsection titles after the cases, but it is unclear if the subsections relate to the prior cases or if the text is moving on to new subjects. I've been reading law books for three years, and this book is the most confusing, disorganized text I have had the privilege of reading. I don't have a problem with the content, just the placement (or attempted placement) of the content into the various subsections.

The remainder of the book is divided into two parts. The first part covers basic eligibility requirements, including both financial and categorical criteria. The second part focuses on the administration of Social Security programs, including the administrative appeals process and judicial review. The book touches on all of the Act’s major benefit programs; however, since the vast majority of contested Social Security claims involve disability benefits, the eligibility criteria and practice issues relevant to Title II and Title XVI disability programs are discussed in greater detail.

Good book, but not entirely necessary...

This is a good book on writing but there are better ones out there. Anne Enquist has some excellent ones. In this Beyond the Basics, there are not many exercises and it is a bit lengthy. It seems that they could have said what they wanted in less pages.

It's all you need

I stated off with Casenote Legal Briefs, which I found to be worthless, then I bought Legalines, which were better and then I bought this and it's perfect. I only use this book to prepare for class and it's always enough. It's a great time saver. I will only use the High Court series from now on. Can't recommend them enough.

Very helpful... despite spelling and punctuation errors.

My professor assigns every case in the casebook. After reading 10-15 cases in a row it is easy to lose focus. This book was helpful in keeping my focus on the important issues. The briefs generally touch on most of the issues that my professor deems important. I don't use these as a substitution for my reading of the cases, so it's ok if it misses an important issue here and there because I likely pick up on it in my reading.

There are quite a few spelling and punctuation errors. It doesn't hinder the effectiveness of the cases. However, it seems like spell check was the only method used to proof these briefs. A lot of errors were just inaccurate words. For example, "Constitution apples to private entity...."

Overall, I definitely recommend these briefs to assist with the understanding of the cases. Aside from this book, if you need help with the overall organization of the class, exam approaches or detailed rule statements, Emmanuel Law Outlines: Constitutional Law is extremely helpful.

A wonderful supplement!

After a while, all the cases in Con Law 1 start to blend together -- especially in Chemerinsky's book, where it seems he edits almost nothing out of the cases. About half way through the semester, I gave up on reading the cases because there simply wasn't time. After finishing reading 15 pages of a case, I'd still have no clue what I was supposed to get out of it. So I changed my strategy at the suggestion of some classmates --- I read Chemerinsky's commentary and the summaries of the cases from the High Court Case Summaries book. Con Law 1 ended up being my highest grade of the year. I wish I had used these books for all my first year classes!
