Big Changes

The Tempest twins Connor and Grace are back and on their deadliest mission yet. When Sidorio learns that he is their blood father, Both Connor and Grace are recruited as spies when the self-proclaimed Vampirate king invites them to his ship. Sidorio plans on making the twins feel at home and exploiting their thirst for blood, turning them to his side of an oncoming war.

More changes are in store in this ever-evolving and always suspenseful series. This is the 5th installment in the Vampirates series and the darkest by far. I have to admit that I didn't care for the direction Somper has taken the series, with Sidorio revealed to be the twins' father. At times, all seems hopeless, sad, and completely depressing. But by the climactic ending, I saw the turn the series is taking; and I'm on board to see where the story goes next. Full of swashbuckling excitement and mayhem, the Vampirates are back and as bloody as ever. Laced with plenty of dark humor and silliness to lighten the mood, the Vampirates always seem to be the most enjoyable characters to read, even if they are ruthless killers. This series continues to be one of my favorites. Fans of vampires and pirates, both young and old should not miss this extraordinary series.

A Fun and Thrilling Adventure!

Empire of Night is an exciting installment in the Vampirates series. After reading the fourth book, Black Heart, many months ago, it was fun to get back into the world of Vampirates. This one does seem to be darker than the previous books with more deaths and difficult life choices to make.

Empire of Night is mainly about Grace and Connor spying on the main villian, Sidorio, by living on his ships. Since Sidorio is actually their father, the twins do lose focus at times. Grace and Connor learn more about their family and themselves and what it means to be a dhampir. Along the way, Connor and Grace both make some bad decisions and essentially lose who they are, but they find their way back in the end. Connor finally excepts who he is to some point, but he still does not like it.

In Empire of Night, we get to know Sidorio more, and he has definitely changed! I did not find him as evil as he used to be. He easily accepts Grace and Connor as his own and takes them under his wing as his heirs. He obviously cares for his children.

I definitely enjoyed this book. There was plenty of pirate action with sword fighting, of course! The ending was completely unexpected. I am curious where Somper is going to take it. This series is a fun, thrilling ride, and I am looking forward to the next book!

totally awesome, man!

wow, what a great book. i think the suspense building up to the main events is good for keeping the readers on their toes, always waiting for whatever monumental bombshell of truth will be dropped on the twins next. this book is a great read. i totally recommend it to all readers, whether they be fans of the series or people new to the concept of the vampirates.

Poor tool to learn from initially, but good reference later.

This book was too difficult to understand when used for a lower division class. The authors write as if you already know linear algebra, differential equations and vector calculus in the first semester, although these classes are not prerequisates to take the courses that this book covers (Intro physics 1-3). The authors include a math toolbox in almost every chapter of the book, which is useless if you haven't seen the math before. It seems as if the authors think that you can understand this stuff by osmosis. If the authors took the time to recall how they felt when they were students and how they learned, I think that this book would be better. I also feel that the seemingly Feinmann style is okay, but other avenues of solving problems could have been explored, as not everyone is a visual learner. In the preface for this book, they should raise the math prerequisates, or learn how to explain things in a more elementary manner. Tipler, Douglas Giancoli and Halliday & Resnik do a better job of explaining the concepts to novice physics students. In short, I think that this book is good to refer to as an upper division student, but is not indicated for a new physics student.

a fundamentally solid book

I've been working with this book for three semesters now, and I feel it's strong, specifically in that:
1. The authors recognize that many beginning students need problem solving strategies; they supply a good method and are consistent with its use.
2. The book makes it abundantly clear what the big ideas are going into (and coming out of) each chapter. This was a very helpful study tool.
3. Their is surprisingly little "hand-waving" in this book, which I think is special for an introductory book on physics.
4. The problems have a _wide_ range of difficulty levels, and there are a lot of them.
5. The book covers a terrific amount of material, including basic mechanics, waves, optics, thermodynamics, and E&M. There's a short section on special relativity and other modern physics too, which is a nice appetite-whetter for students who will continue on.
This book can be very useful, but the organizational structure might at first seem a little opaque. After some getting used to, I have found the book a great resource. I would definitely recommend it for an introductory sequence at almost any school. I think the book might fit in best at more rigorous institutions, because it doesn't really pull many punches in the early chapters (though it does a good job making challenging material digestible). A good instructor could effectively use it at any institution, though--it's written to be understood.
One side comment regarding other reviews: The intro physics courses at SF State (where some of the reviewers used this book, including me) are unfortunately out of sequence, with students taking intro E&M with as little as one semester of calculus under their belts. This is obviously a big problem and I think some criticism has been leveled at the book (unfairly) because of it.

Excellent intro text but users need some math maturity

I've used this book for the 3-semester intro to physics sequence taught at San Francisco State and have been thoroughly pleased with it. Basic principles and key concepts are heavily emphasized. The authors tend to de-emphasize memorizing derived formulae (which leads to plug-and-chug problem solving) and focuses on breaking down a problem into its basic elements, which is in my opinion the best way to approach problems in physics. Some might find the math a bit rigorous for introductory physics but it's the same math as in Giancoli or Tipler which is just calculus (some differential equations is used later in the text but so does the others). This is not a "learn by example" text, since the examples tend to emphasize additional elements of the concepts (usually by showing some of the math techniques) but the text does show well thought out outlines to solving problems. It really has given me an excellent foundation in physics.

Beautiful book

My son, like most boys, is in love with dragons. This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend. The dragons are large and amazing in their detail.
There are only a few dragons though and the book seems a bit delicate - not so good for the younger set.

Beautiful Jumbo pop-up book by one of the talented Hilderbrandt brothers that made the J.R.R. Tolkien calanders!

[[VIDEOID:mo13RIFOXSOWTHF]]I purchased this book in the late 1990's and while it is not as intricate as Reinhardt's and Sabuda's pop-ups, the large size of the pop-up dragons painted in bright acrylic paint colours in the Hilderbrandt brothers style combined with the paper engineering made in well worth the purchase! Also these pop-ups may be more durable because they are less intricate then the Sabuda, Rheinhart books. It is easier to open and close then the other books and the opening and closing of the Wyvern's jaws on the first 2 pages can fasinate any age! When I open and close the pages featuring the dragon from the St.George legend, his bat wings spread out and pull in and his chest bulges out in the middle of the 2 page spread while there there are human bones at his feet! The scene is complete with a castle and is painted like the J.R.R. Tolkien calanders that the Hilderbrandt brothers painted. It's sad that Tim Hilderbrandt died some years ago. I wonder if he worked on any pop-up books. Anyway the 5 pop-up dragons here are all great and it goes great with Dragons and Monsters by Sabuda and Reinhart! Highly recommended! I have uploaded a video to give a visual idea of the quality of the book! Sorry for the occasional glare but the book is shiny with a gloss. Hope it represents the book well enough!

Intriguing pop-ups

As you turn the pages of this book, the dragons literally jump off of the pages at you. Beautifully drawn and executed, in an oversize book with even more oversized dragons! The text is wordy at times, but of course you don't buy this book for the text. Hildebrandt's illustrations translate into glorious creatures with the use of deep colors and intriguing mechanics. I just wish there were more!

Binky doesn't warm up enough before baseball practice, is injured, can't play, and feels isolated. Eventually, he works with the team to find a way to continue participating. Children, particularly those who are reluctant readers, may be drawn to the book by its association with Marc Brown's picture books and the Arthur television series. But it isn't Brown who is writing here, and Krensky's authorship, though acknowledged, is underplayed. Librarians may want to let kids know that this is fun but it isn't quite the "real deal." Great book and series

I just got this for my daughter from the library a few days ago. She's in 1st grade and read it in exactly 45 minutes. She did admit later that she didn't understand a few words, but she got the jist of the story. She has to read 2,000 minutes for school over the next few months and I have to log it all, so I was glad to find books slightly longer, but that also have pictures. The chapters are short and the font is a decent size so they don't spend too long on any one page and get bored. I love that this is a good series with a sports theme. My daughter is really in to sports so she can relate to these books well. It's also nice that Arthur is such a widely recognized and liked character by kids.

In one of the author's asides to "Serious Reader" that dot this irreverent diary of a modern country doctor, we learn that "of all the diseases a physician may contract in the line of duty, by far the most dangerous is seriosity." That danger is remote for Conger, who after a period of "finding" himself in the Berkeley ambiance of the '60s, transplanted himself, his new second wife and their daughter to the little town of Dumster, Vt, where he envisioned a life of relative peace. Instead, as successor to a much-loved and canny old general practitioner, he began a learning process under the guidance of his patients, who taught him to be the doctor they wanted. In an engaging blend of rustic wisdom and big-city know-how, Conger demonstrates the management of his patients and their ailments, real and imagined. His rapport with them is such that he notes with the gently self-mocking humor that permeates his narrative, "although they know I am a misfit, they don't throw it up at me."

Truly enjoyed this book. As a Nurse and a Vermonter I found this book to be so true of the Vermont I know and our blessed health care providers. I recommend it to anyone beginning their career in health care.

Great book.

Great book! We enjoyed it very much. For a used book, it was in very good condition, we shared it with our doctor. We live in bush Alaska (off the road system), you would be amazed at what we use Duct Tape for.
