Great love stories thrive on sacrifice. Throughout The Twilight Saga (Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse), Stephenie Meyer has emulated great love stories--Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights--with the fated, yet perpetually doomed love of Bella (the human girl) and Edward (the vampire who feeds on animals instead of humans). In Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final installment in the series, Bella’s story plays out in some unexpected ways. The ongoing conflicts that made this series so compelling--a human girl in love with a vampire, a werewolf in love with a human girl, the generations-long feud between werewolves and vampires--resolve pretty quickly, apparently so that Meyer could focus on Bella’s latest opportunity for self-sacrifice: giving her life for someone she loves even more than Edward. How close she comes to actually making that sacrifice is questionable, which is a big shift from the earlier books. Even though you knew Bella would make it through somehow, the threats to her life, and to her relationship with Edward, had previously always felt real. It’s as if Meyer was afraid of hurting her characters too much, which is unfortunate, because the pain Bella suffered at losing Edward in New Moon, and the pain Jacob suffered at losing Bella again and again, are the fire and the heart that drive the whole series. Diehard fans will stick with Bella, Edward, and Jacob for as many twists and turns as possible, but after most of the characters get what they want with little sacrifice, some readers may have a harder time caring what happens next. Grade 9 Up—Meyer closes her epic love story of a human, a vampire, and a werewolf in this, the final installment of the saga. The story opens with Bella and Edward's wedding, and relations between Jacob and Bella remain uneasy. On honeymoon and unshackled from any further concerns about premarital sex, Edward fulfills his promise to consummate their marriage before he changes Bella into a vampire. An unexpected conception throws their idyllic world back into chaos as factions (both wolf and vampire) battle over whether or not to destroy the potential monster that is killing Bella from within. The captivating angst, passions, and problems manage to satisfyingly fill pages where surprisingly little action takes place, even after the powerful child's birth brings the Cullen family under the scrutiny of the Volturi. The international cadre of vampires who come to the Cullens' aid are fascinating, but distract from the development of prime characters at a pivotal moment. The novel begins and ends with Bella's voice, while Jacob narrates the middle third of the tale, much like the final pages of Eclipse (Little, Brown 2007). While darker and more mature than the previous titles, Meyer's twists and turns are not out of character. Where to start?

First off, let me say that I have always hated Bella. What's to like really. She would have more dimension if she was made of cardboard! Throughout the whole series she kept saying that she didn't deserve a friend like Jacob. I guess we were supposed to disagree with her? And the birth seen in this book?! I had to literally put this book down and concentrate very hard on not throwing up. Besides, her having a baby with Edward should have been impossible. If only Mrs. Meyer had followed her own rules.
Things that annoyed me:
1. Of course BELLA had to be gifted. Why can't she actually be imperfect for once instead of just saying she is?
2. There was zero action at the end. Seriously? We waited an entire series to end with intense negotiations? I wanted Rose to die, do something selfless fir once. I wanted Edward to die so SHE (I refuse to say her name) could suffer for eternity. I wanted blood!
3. Her daughter's name is Reneseme. Vomit. Jacob imprints on Renesme. Vomit once again.
4. SHE gets everything she wanted without giving anything up. She basically says Charlie is on a "need to know" basis, Rene has Phil and Jacob loves Reneseme now so everything is good. What about her friends?
5. Last one, promise. Did anyone think about what would happen when the Cullens have to move? Would Jacob just leave his pack? Would they come with him?

Perfect

I feel like all my friends are gone. I loved this book. It is my favorite. This book totally shocked me. The love between Bella and Edward is breathtaking. I do not want to spoil anything. You will find out things about Jacob and the tribe that you did not know. It turned out to be very interesting and made a lot of sense. Once the book was finished I felt lonely. Every night I read these books and felt that I knew all the characters. Read this book it is not going to disappoint.

I wanted Romeo & Juliet and I got Cinderella

WARNING - Spoilers Ahead!!!
First let me start by saying that I LOVED the 1st three books in this series. I couldn't put them down and finished all 3 in just over 2 days. Naturally I immedatly picked up the forth book (I'm a late comer and bought all 4 at once) and again was sucked right in. The fourth book is sub divide into 3 smaller "Books" - Human Bella, Jacob, and Vampire Bella. As a woman (and a mother) I love hearing the story from Bella's point of view. The 1st "book" (Human Bella) was fantastic. All of the tension is full-filled with a fantasy wedding and a romantic honeymoon that quickly leads to conflict and tragedy again. YESSSS! Then the disappointing stuff rears it's ugly head.
Jacob's book is, of course, written from his point of view. The male point of view is not one of Myers strong points. This section is the longest in the book and is nesacery to set up the ending but it just seems to drag and drag and drag...I was actually able to put the book down easily and go to bed at a decent time instead of stating up til two in the morning to finish it like I did with the other ones. On a positive note, the last chapter of this section was really good - SPOILER - I thought Bella was REALLY dead. Would Edward be able to stay alive for their daughter? Or would he try to commit suicide again? And then Jacob imprinted on the baby! OH MY GOD! I completely didn't see that one coming even though I knew I should have. Could Edward and Jacob get along enough to protect the baby from the Volturi (I saw this one coming)? I had to keep reading!
OK, Spoiler done...The third section was good, of course, because it was from Vampire Bella's point of view. Like other readers, I found it interesting to see this awkward human become not only super-human, but super-vampire. She's stronger then Emmett, she's more graceful then Rosilie and she can FINNALLY have her Edward. Plus she has a really cool super power just like the rest of the Cullen "children." And then the tragedy unfolds, they are coming for her baby and they have no hope of surviving. In true Romeo and Juliet style the star crossed lovers prepare to died to save their miraculous child. The intenceness was back and I read with blinding speed and TOTAL focus. The "battle" was intense and -small SPOILER- I kept waiting for Jacob to run with Ressemsa. I SOOOO wanted to get my Romeo & Juliet ending with everyone dead and Ressemsa running, her tears flowing into Jacobs fur as they disappear into the forest, never to be seen again. BUT NOOOO - I got Cinderella's (or maybe Snow White's because of the cottage) happily ever after! Everyone survive and happily ever after begins, forever.
SPOILER OVER - I'm not saying that I didn't like the ending, just that I'm disappointed that it didn't end the way I expected. It left me with a sense of euphoria and did NOT ruin my love of the series as a whole.
Over all, I liked the book and would recommend to anyone to read the series as a complete set.
