Too simplistic to be of much help.

I suppose if you are REALLY having a hard time understanding the basics of property, this might be of use. But, if you were looking to shore-up your understanding of the more difficult aspects of property, this is not helpful.

I understand this isn't meant to go into the level of detail of a Hornbook or an E&E, but there is very little beyond basic definitions. The chapters on Takings and Eminent Domain are about 5 pages combined, and have roughly the same amount of content as the introductory paragraph at the start of the textbook chapters.

Maybe my class just did more than most others (class was taught by the great Tom Merrill, who also wrote our textbook), but I would not recommend this book.

I virtually never review things, but this book literally saved me in property. Nothing about the class made any sense so I bought the Short and Happy Guide and taught it to myself. When taking the exam I kept remembering the various mnemonic devices she created and while I don't know my grade yet, I do know that it would have been substantially worse without this book. Also if you have Barbri access, she apparently has lectures on there for free.

If anyone ever meets this amazing woman, please send her my (and my study group's) gratitude.

Good, but needs more detail

Short and Happy is great for most of the concepts in your course, but I would not count on it as exhaustive. It is excellent at teaching what it does, but I found that it did not go into enough detail for my professor's class. I would also recommend the Glannon Guide to Property as a backup. For the price though, Short and Happy is wonderful and worth buying even for the author's introduction--it has a good mindset to approach all of law school.

Great Con Law book. I highly recommend!!!

An amazing summation on various landmark constitutional cases throughout history. Professor Alexander wrote this in a manner that was easy to understand accompanied by great wit. This book is a great read for a Con Law book. It was not boring or dry. It did not contain legal jargon that Professor Alexander did not clearly explain. It was fun to read, amusing at times and being from Jersey I loved his humor. I highly recommend it. By far the best Con Law accompaniment book I have ever come across!!!

A rehash of the History Nation of Islam, with some clear-cut bias showing

A History of the Nation of Islam
. To be honest, I must first layout my own biases. I have just completed a book entitled Is The White Man Still the Devil, the Nation of Islam, (the Honorable) Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X. myths versus realities, an Islamic perspective. I fully expect it to be available on the Amazon.com website by late December. I make this comment so that one will understand in reading my critique that my biases are not pulled out of the air but are based on the fact that I myself know personally 90% of the characters mentioned in this book and you may find on the Amazon.com website section, if it is still available as it was written more than 10 years ago, my review of Karl Evans' vitriolic book called The Messenger, the Rise and Fall of Elijah Muhammad.a book quoted from much too often by this author. I was the dentist and an assistant minister in Chicago for the Hon. Elijah Muhammad for many years. I was also the dentist for Malcolm X who introduced me to and gave me a letter of introduction to the Hon. Elijah Muhammad even before I became a Muslim and I was an assistant minister for him in Newark New Jersey when he became the person who got Islam moving there. I have also known Minister Louis Farrakhan from the time when he was known only as Minister Louis X, the Minister of the Boston Temple and later Temple #7 in New York. I also orthodontically corrected his dentition as well, and spent many hours in conversation with him as to his new direction for the Nation of Islam under his leadership. A critique of him by the author takes up almost half the book. Lastly, I was the first and only Organization President of what was initially called the Nation of Islam (but was in quick sucession), given several other names under Imam Warith Deen Mohammad. I knew him when he was first known as Minister Wallace D. Muhammad and I was choosen by him to be what was called the Organization President for about 18 months while under the leadership that he assumed upon the death of his father,the Hon. Elijah Muhammad. My initial problem with the book under review is the cover itself. It portrays Minister Louis Farrakhan as though he is a raving madman. His portrayal in the book is also highly biased from my point of view, as I know where he is really coming from. I'm also unhappy about the use of the term, the royal family related to the time of the Hon. Elijah Mohammad and his family and the Nation of Islam. in England yes, but in America, there is no such thing as a "royal family", and there certainly is no African American Royal family. So what family was the author writing about? Elijah Muhammad had a number of children both in and out of wedlock. I know all of them, and there was no way in the world that they could be or should be labeled "Royal" as I can assure you once the Hon. Elijah Mohammad passed many of them were seriously, economically deprived. I also think it's very important that this book, with its extensive bibliography,should have made choices that are meaningful, accurate and not so purposefully derogatory. The choice from Benyon's book that the Nation of Islam was " A Voodoo cult" is badly chosen. The quote may be accurate as quoted by the author of this book, but it is not meaningful to quote and use that terminology without correcting the misunderstanding or choice of label used by the person that first used that term so many years ago. I can assure you that the Nation of Islam, when you look at its growth, its organization, its historical meaningfulness, etc,was not a cult. I could go on and on, but instead I will simply wrap this up by saying it's clear that the author does not have a clear spiritual understanding in any manner whatsoever as it relates to the spiritual basis the Hon. Elijah Muhammad wrote from and that lack of understanding and recognition of the role played played in that movement shows throughout, and I know for sure he did not live a lavish lifestyle as portrayed by the author although he was well able to do so in his reclining years. I guess as a scholar, she figured you are supposed to leave those things out, but if you will read Herbert Bergs' book who wrote Elijah Muhammad and Islam (available on Amazon.Com) you will find he had a sense of comfortability when writing about this phenominal movement in American history and its faithbased structure being a scholar himself yet, he certainly took the time to sort out and make clear mention of and gave due credit to the spiritual base used by Elijah Muhammad. I had no sense at all of that in this Dawsons' book. As an Amazon Kindle is it worth $22.50? I'm not so sure about that.

Super Study Aid

These Nutshells, in my opinion are one of the top two study aids on the market. This book will help you learn the broad concepts that the class is about before you have the actual class and begin the readings from the case book. Also, most of them aren't very long, so it makes a super refresher book before really starting to study for finals. Naturally, with free shipping, I think AMAZON is the best place to purchase them.

Excellent Resource

This book was really helpful during my open-note Crim Pro final. I had some multiple choice and true/false in addition to essays and some of the questions were directly answered by the book. It was also a good overview for some tricky subjects, really helped pull it all together.

SAYS 2011, BUT APPEARS TO BE THE 2006 EDITION

I just opened the cover, may be a great book, but in the preface it states "This text includes cases decided by [SCOTUS] through July, 2006, the conclusion of the October 2005 Term", though it's supposed to be a 2011 edition.

This might just be an error, or I might be overlooking something. When this if fixed, or there is another later preface also in the book, or the like, I have no problem with this post being deleted.

Do not buy - written by academic sadists.

Aren't these things supposed to clarify the law? This thing is horribly written.
Example from the text (page 144):
"If one assumes that the councilmanic proponents of the many actual attempts which resemble our illustration were not poorly advised, or that the legislative-adminstrative characterization of the contemplated action was not really debatable, one is left with the question whether a power exercise in which so much is risked to avoid popular reaction is worth council approval."
Now if that sentence is understandable to you, then go ahead and buy it.

I would further add that there are no footnotes in this beast. It would be nice to know what the source of their legal summation is, but this is hidden from your view. They summarize their issues in their own obtuse way, but do not provide any kind of statutory or case law citation to read more about the particular issue you might be interested in, so it is really not a good reference aid. The index is likewise poorly done. They break out the index into several broad and rather randomly selected categories, and then have fifty subheads. So if you want to quickly look up a particular issue, you have to comprehend first what category the subhead might be listed under that would contain your question.

Oh the humanity!

Update for you skeptics who think I am just trolling: If you don't believe me, take a look inside! The publisher helpfully allows you to peek inside the first chapter -- by all means do so and see if you do not agree with my assessment.

My law prof assigned this book, and tells me his review of others on the topic leads him to believe this is the best one. Harrumph. It's full of note cases which tease -- but don't say how the law came out. It's horrendously edited -- full of typos and sloppiness. And in many places, badly needs updating. My prof provided additional reading for about half of our classes. I'm hoping the next edition is better. Or at least better proofread.
