A wonderful supplement!

After a while, all the cases in Con Law 1 start to blend together -- especially in Chemerinsky's book, where it seems he edits almost nothing out of the cases. About half way through the semester, I gave up on reading the cases because there simply wasn't time. After finishing reading 15 pages of a case, I'd still have no clue what I was supposed to get out of it. So I changed my strategy at the suggestion of some classmates --- I read Chemerinsky's commentary and the summaries of the cases from the High Court Case Summaries book. Con Law 1 ended up being my highest grade of the year. I wish I had used these books for all my first year classes!

Great Supplement, So much better than legalines

The High Court Case Summaries are great commercial brief books, but have much better features than legalines. They provide a more concise brief and usually keep them to one page instead of the legalines who bunch all of their material together. The also have the quick facts and memory image as well as a black letter law and definitions section. I wish they had a high courts case summary book for all my classes.

Very helpful... despite spelling and punctuation errors.

My professor assigns every case in the casebook. After reading 10-15 cases in a row it is easy to lose focus. This book was helpful in keeping my focus on the important issues. The briefs generally touch on most of the issues that my professor deems important. I don't use these as a substitution for my reading of the cases, so it's ok if it misses an important issue here and there because I likely pick up on it in my reading.

There are quite a few spelling and punctuation errors. It doesn't hinder the effectiveness of the cases. However, it seems like spell check was the only method used to proof these briefs. A lot of errors were just inaccurate words. For example, "Constitution apples to private entity...."

Overall, I definitely recommend these briefs to assist with the understanding of the cases. Aside from this book, if you need help with the overall organization of the class, exam approaches or detailed rule statements, Emmanuel Law Outlines: Constitutional Law is extremely helpful.

this book scarred me for life.

when my parents got a divorce I was presented with this book by someone who was no doubt wellmeaning and kind. it is not their fault that I continue to blame Danny the dinosaur (or what ever the protagonist's name is) for many of the hangups I had in childhood surrounding my parents divorce.

before reading this book I had never been worried that my parents would somehow come to love me and my sister less because of the divorce or that they were splitting up because of me. the care with which the author addressed anxieties I did not yet have until they were presented to me herein as "perfectly normal" further reinforced that these things were big and scary problems that I ought to worry about.

I had also not yet been worried that one of my parents would move far away, a thing that never happened, until reading the supposedly reassuring words in this book.

to anyone in the midst of a divorce, I implore you, do not buy this book for your child. if you don't know how to talk to your kid about the divorce, just don't badmouth your former spouse and explain what is going on with as much facts and as little "comforting reassurance" or editorializing as possible. then be there for your kid. no book is going to replace your presence in your child's life, no book will explain your disappearance.

ask what your child is worried about, address those worries, don't go out of your way to inflict more by getting them to read this book.

Dinosaurs Drinking??

I was appalled when I turned the page and saw a picture of the 'mom' dinosaur drinking a martini with wine and liquor bottles on the table behind her, along with a bottle of pills spilled open! I just don't think that was appropriate for children.

In addition, I think the book should have been geared to DIVORCE and not dating and getting remarried. Those topics should have been addressed in a separate book. It is hard enough helping a child cope with divorce, let alone adding new step parents and step siblings in the mix much too prematurely.

Still searching for a good book for children on divorce. I was very dissapointed in this.

Paved with good intentions.

Although possible sources of strife are briefly mentioned (your parents may criticize each other, or may not know how to relate to you), others are glossed over. The book assures the child reader that both parents continue to love the child, which is warm and fuzzy but not (in my experience as an elementary teacher) always true. Unfortunately.
In 31 pages, children who may be just facing the bombshell news of their parents' divorce are galloped willy-nilly through the times ahead, including the possible remarriage of their parents and the advent of stepchildren. It's true this is among the range of things that may have to be faced, but other unpleasant things that sometimes have to be faced during divorce are glossed over and left out (public scenes, calls to the police, institutionalization, alcoholism...). So why drag that in at such a delicate moment?
I wonder if this book perhaps offers more comfort to the parents of the children it's intended for than to the children themselves.

Fascinating book!

I came across this book at random and decided to read it because I am interested in the Underground railroad. I was immediately drawn in and proceeded to read the whole thing. the writing is well done and combines both historical depth and storytelling. The events retold here are fascinating accounts and the one about Peter and William Still definitely needs to be made into a movie! The last chapter about combating modern day slavery was a great addition to a history book and brings the subject home. I also like his focus on how much a young activist can do since I am in college. I would highly recommend this book!

I used this text as preparation for university calculus. Each chapter has a high level of rigor and clearly explains the mechanics of solving problems. The text ignores extensive discussion of applications, which is a good thing. References to applications in introductory math texts always strike me as ad hoc, distracting and useless. If you want to know why some particular analytic method is useful in the real world then you need to study up in the particular discipline. If you want a straight and detailed exposition of methods then this is the text. Much stronger than the Larson texts on college algebra/trigonometry.

Clear, yet Strangely Incoherent

David Cohen does an excellent job in the individual chapters explaining this or that component of precalculus. But the book as a whole is strangely incoherent. The order of the chapters seems almost random, as the book jumps from topic to disconnected topic. For example, we are given a clear account of how to work matrices...and then are never told or shown WHY we bothered learning it in the first place--we're hustled off to another unrelated topic. So-called theorists in our fad-ridden education departments call this technique "spiraling," a tactic designed to keep the little kiddies on their toes and off balance and thus more receptive to exploring new things. Or something like that. In actual practice, however, as well as according to common sense, the result of "spiraling" is only frustration and confusion. If Cohen would rearrange the order of the chapters and provide some connective tissue, this would probably make it a really good textbook.

This book was supposed to take two weeks to get to me, and it only took about a week. It also came with an interactive disc I wasn't aware of that's proving to be quite the helpful tool.
