When is a thesaurus more than a thesaurus? When it is Bartlett's Roget's Thesaurus. As well as providing synonyms like a standard thesaurus, this work has the added value of the creative combination of both Bartlett's and Roget's traditions plus some features of an almanac. Roget devised a conceptual (as opposed to alphabetical) thesaurus. The imagery of Bartlett's quotations adds breadth and depth to some categories here, and the 100 almanaclike lists of facts, interspersed in the body, supplement the synonyms. The introductory portion of the book includes an explanation of and rationale for this unique approach to thesaurus preparation. It is a North American work with emphasis on contemporary idiom and usage. There are two category lists, one grouped by concept and the other alphabetical, plus a directory of sidebar lists and a list of abbreviations on the contents page.

For each category in the thesaurus, there are selections of synonyms for each appropriate part of speech. The general arrangement of the thesaurus can be visualized from the following example. The concept of Spatial Relations has 61 categories including space, location, cities, rivers, absence, expansion, etc. Category 569 Mountains and Hills starts with a quote by John Ruskin. It has nouns, adjectives, and verbs that describe things hilly or mountainous. There are cross-references to such related categories as Geology and Height. There is also a list of Notable Mountains, Mountain Ranges and Hills. The lists are a form of ready reference. The one associated with category 299 Love is of Famous Lovers of Fact and Fiction. In the lengthy and very detailed index, each word, phrase, foreign expression, and idiom in the thesaurus is found with an associated number for category and/or keyword and paragraph.

This is a great book (great 445.14)--great in contents (plentiful 97.4), great in size (heavy 538.9), great value for the money (important 799.7), and great fun to use (wonderful! 294.20). Highly recommended to all libraries and wordsmiths.

Functional, Intuitive, Powerful Reference Tool

For me as a student, translator, and writer, this thesaurus has become one of my best friends. It is organized in a very creative way, with an index in the back referring to the various sections of the book's body, where terms are grouped by topic. In the index, you look up the word for which you need related words, and then you choose between the many terms under that heading, each with a distinct variation in meaning. You can thereby turn to the section that best relates to the meaning you are looking for.

Once you've turned to the section referred to in the index, you not only find an extensive list of synonyms for that term, but you also have, on that same page, words that are related but which fall in different parts of speech. That has been very useful for me. And since the terms are grouped by topic, you can look through neighboring entries and pages of entries, finding all kinds of similar and related words, whereas, in a traditional thesaurus layout, the only thing adjacent to your entry would be those words that start with the same letters.

In short, what makes this thesaurus so wonderful is that you have access to an extensive range of word power, since the words referenced in the entry you're interested in are not limited to the space just below the word itself: they are spread throughout the book in logical groups, and the index quickly directs you to the sense of the word that you are interested in.

Don't get the ones in dictionary form..get this kind

Indispensable! I gave my old copy of this to my nephew going away to college. What a mistake for me! I was in graduate school at the time and had another thesaurus in dictionary form..and figured that would be fine. Yuck. I found myself wishing I had this version again..so I just bought another one.
The way I use it is not to come up with words to impress people (well, not usually) but rather to remember a word that I want to use, but can't exactly recall (must be my age). I know you all have done it and can relate to that great feeling of finally finding that word! The conceptual setup is perfect for this becuase sometimes you can get close with a guess, but you need that whole section on weight (for example) to really pinpoint your word (not just synonyms for heavy).

There are a lot of quaint reference guides out on the market today, but as a professional writer and teacher this is always the thesaurus I reach for. Not only are you provided with nearly half a million synonyms, but Rogets make the definition conise and meaningful.

Grade 4-6-Sixth-grader Leah's sense of self is badly shaken when she learns that her mother's weeks-long silence has been hiding a cross-country move that doesn't include her. The fact that her "mother" is actually her stepmother is only gradually revealed to readers. As Leah starts to let go of her bitterness, she makes tentative progress toward a solid relationship with her father and a restored sense of who she is. The strengths of the book are Leah's well-developed character and the realistic nastiness she displays as an outlet for her misery. Her inability to focus on schoolwork and her purposeful attempts to wound her father's new wife both help to capture the extent of her loss. The close friendship she forms with a boy is less convincing, given sixth-grade social norms. In addition, her father is drawn as a puzzlingly positive character, which seems at odds with her previous lack of relationship with him. Readers who enjoy quiet stories of personal growth will likely overlook these slightly implausible plot elements and respond to Leah's journey as she seeks a place to belong.

As the two lonely kids secretly explore the darkened auditorium to get away from the cafeteria crowd during their lunch period, they start to build a trusting relationship. At home, though, Leah's anger and feelings of abandonment make for difficulties with distant Dad and overcompensating Gail. Cautiously, Leah finally begins to confront all that has happened to her, and with Will's steadfast encouragement, she takes some positive steps: she tries out for a play and stands up to a girl who harasses her. Will's wisdom and manner belie his age, and Leah's growing strength and self-knowledge evolve a little too quickly as the story spins toward a happy ending; but the characters are very appealing, and the plot will hold readers' attention. ALmost Home

Almost Home is written by Nora Raleigh Baskin. This book is extraordinary and is highly recommended for summer reading for both girls and boys. This is Ms. Baskin's seconed novel. She has also created What Every Girl (Except Me) Knows. She grew up in New Paltz, NY, as well as in Brooklyn.
The main character in this book is Leah Baer; she is twelve yeas old and lives in New Paltz, New York. One of the very important minor characters is Will Hiller, the only one who seems to like her. Leah's parents are divorced, and she is living with her father, and her stepmother. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. There are real places mentioned in the book that are here in New Paltz such as Huguenot Street and the Mohonk Mountains. The book was great and highly recommended.

GREASTEST BOOK EVER

This book is great for tweens ages 9-14. I could easily relate to the main character Leah, and all her actions and emotions. Baskin really puts down in words what is going on in a 12 year old's head. I couldn't put the book dwon for a second IT WAS GREAT~I would read this book over and over again. If you love this book (like i do) i highly request reading her 1st book WHAT EVERY GIRL EXCEPT ME KNOWS, also.

The book Almost Home was amazing.Even though Leah wanted to kill herself she worked through her problems and got through it. This story is truly inspiring. It shows that even the toughest situations can be turned into good. If you want an encouraging story, I recommend this book to you.

Not quite the pay off I expected

**SPOILERS [well, sorta...]**
Sadly I have to give this one 3.5 stars due to disappointing ending.
Let me just say I LOVE, LOVE , LOVED this series!! Read in all 3 in less than a week, staying up into the wee hours of the morning more than once.
So why the lower rating you ask? Well, this 3rd installment comes in at almost 100 pages LESS than the previous two and I REALLY felt those pages should have been present and filled with a few payoff scenes for the folks who have invested their time in this series and come to really care about these characters. I REALLY wanted to be there when Christopher got his vengeance. And I really wanted to be there when He and Wyn finally consummated their relationship. We got their first kiss in book one, we got a peek at building passion in book 2, and in this one I'd really hoped we could at least be there for the set up of when they could could come together "in Joy" as they'd been waiting for. After all of the suffering for poor Christopher, I wanted to be there for the first time he made love while actually being in love. Not the whole drawn out thing, but at least the prelude to the big moment.
And what about Razi? Did that situation actually resolve itself or is the author suggesting it didn't matter one way or the other since it was never even addressed? I just felt robbed with it ending the way it did.
I understand how hard it must be to satisfactorily wrap up an awesome, layered, detailed series like this one, and that the author probably found herself needing another book to do it right, or just having to cut herself off at the dramatic climax and skip ahead to do a concise wrap up. Due to time restraint or whatever, she chose the latter, and I for one felt like she sucked the wind out of my sails for doing so- and from the POV of a character we'd never met before to boot! No. Just. No.
Would I recommend this series anyway? Yes, but with the recommendation comes with a warning about the less than stellar ending.

A Masterful Finish

This book closed out the trilogy very nicely. I never felt things were too rushed, the novel for the most part went along at a very agreeable pace. I didn't much like the very end, however, I would have liked to know more of the final scene rather than it just cutting and going to five years later. But still it was a nice resolution, and a thrilling novel. Yes, it's true that the entire thing happened in the single camp, and there wasn't a whole lot of action; these weren't the drivers of the story though. It's the characters that really drive this story, and if you've missed that you've missed a great deal. Mrs. Kiernan has done a wonderful job of constructing endearing, genuine, and believable characters. Yes, they have their quirks, but that seams to make them all the better. In all, I think it was a great story, and would recommend it to anyone.

Decent conclusion to a good series

Wynter, her friends, and the Merron tribe arrive at Alberon’s camp and reality slams back around our trio, reminding them of their social and political divisions. I hate diplomatic, political speak and it’s frustrating, at first, watching Razi and Wynter dance around the issues with Alberon. But whether it’s a result of their close relationship or the long journey away from court, it doesn’t take too long to cut to the chase and lay it all on the table. Finally, we get the answers that have been sought since the trilogy began. But not all at once – we get bits and pieces slowly building to a whole. And a whole ‘nother side to the story as we finally get to meet Alberon and learn his side of everything that has been happening.

And it’s a mess. A huge, jumbly, messy mess of wrongs and rights and do the ends justify the means and how to save a kingdom and it’s people and alliances made with those you hate for the sake of a purpose and how far should a leader have to sacrifice or compromise for his duty and responsibilities. The division between Alberon & his father is chasmic and I honestly thought war was inevitable. I just couldn’t see how Wynter and Razi would be able to mediate or resolve the differences of opinion (and approach) between the king and his disowned son.

Wynter also has to make her own choices and decide where to stand on her own convictions; political and social expectations, and the relationship she has established with Christopher, a social inferior so far as the court is concerned. In the second book, Christopher made his stance clear when introducing Wynter to his people and protecting her from the Loups-Garous. Wynter has the same opportunity here and you can’t help but love Christopher all the more more for his patience and lack of pressure while she wrestles with the decision.

You’ve heard the cliche about a crisis balancing on the edge of a knife? Well, it’s quite literal in The Rebel Prince. And not everything gets wrapped up in a pretty bow once the fog clears and the weapons are laid down. But it feels like it does. After a long series of drawing out every detail and explaining every action, the story stops in the middle of a huge tumult and then is wrapped up in a sugary-sweet epilogue. If you felt cheated by The Hobbit (and Lord of the Rings) employ of “The eagles are coming” then you’ll likely feel a bit excluded from the resolutory action here.

Oh, but you finally get an answer for the whole wolves question. Frankly, while the ghosts served a narrative purpose in the first and second book (albeit small purposes), the talking cats were fun but felt like a bit of an unnecessary contrivance. And then you get “wolves” right in the latter third of this last volume and it felt out of left field. Going back & rereading, I can see where Kiernan sprinkled little hints along the way. But I think there has to be some basis to foreshadowing. Explaining what I mean through a different popular series – in Twilight, the hints that are laid regarding Edward being a vampire only work because the reader knows about the concept of vampires in the first place. The semi-fantasy/semi-reality world Wynter lives in never hints at the existence of anything outside of ghosts and talking cats (both of which are mentioned almost immediately in the first chapter of the first volume) so “wolves” being anything besides a solely canine-type animal felt like a sudden lurch in the established world-building.

All that being said, I enjoyed this series and it is difficult to browse through a volume looking for a particular passage as I find myself an hour later, happily rereading the entire thing.

Good resource though dated

Hornbooks are valuable assets to law students. The usual practice at Law School is to use a Casebook, which contains summations of major cases. The student then "briefs" that case by summing up the major points of law used to determine the ruling in that particular case. Of course, that presupposes that the student knows what the principle points of law are in that case. And Law Schools DO NOT teach that: it is up to the student to acquire the neccessary understanding.

That is where the Hornbook comes in. Unlike the Case Books, the Hornbooks EXPLAIN the law. By studying the Hornbook first, one has a better chance of understanding the law as it is applied in real life.

Eerily similar to another book

When I picked up this book to read the section on dust mites this afternoon, I felt terribly confused because it sounded just like the book I read earlier this afternoon. I checked to make sure I hadn't accidentally acquired two versions of the same book, but no, I hadn't. The other book, Taming Asthma and Allergy by Controlling Your Environment: A Guide for Patients by Robert A. Wood, was published three years earlier and didn't appear to have any link to this one. Dr. Wood is not an author of the ALA book, and his book is not credited in the dust mites section (although it is listed as a reference on page 221 of the ALA book.

I compared the two books line-by-line, and they were eerily similar: the American Lung Association's section on dustmites copies the structure of the prior book, with some slight paraphrasing and editing. For example, here's a breakdown of one paragraph found on page 65-66 of the Wood book, and p. 79 of the ALA book:

WOOD: "The next step is to remove all unnecessary fabric items, especially stuffed animals."

ALA: "The next step to controlling dustmites is to consider removing all unnecessary fabric items from the bedroom. Try to get rid of as many stuffed animals as possible."

WOOD "Other items you should remove from the bed include extra pillows, canopies, and comforters -- especially down comforters. Replace them with items that can be laundered easily, and wash all items in a hot cycle at least once every two weeks."

ALA, p. 79 You should also remove extra pillows, canopies, and thick comforters (especially down comforters) and replace them with items you can readily wash. You should wash all bedding in hot water at least two weeks to kill mites.

Amazing common sense for a governmental publication

This book provides a good baseline start for controlling environmental allergies for parents with highly allergic or asthmatic children. Of course, the parents themselves can also benefit by following the procedures indicated in the book. Two things that I did not find in the book were: a comprehensive plan for dealing with food allergies/food sensivities, and also what nutritional supplements people with allergies/asthma should be taking. Vitamin C should be taken by all people who have allergies and/or asthma, because high doses of Vitamin C block mast cell degranulation, which inhibits histamine release (thus Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine). Also, Vitamin C has bronchodilator effects. For more information about Vitamin C's myriad functions, read the book The Failures of American Medicine.
