Believer or not, this book is excellent

As a pastor's kid, Samara Taylor is supposed to have a good relationship with God and an unshakable faith. But a lot of things in her life have made Sam a doubter. With her alcoholic mom in rehab after a DUI and her father more concerned with his congregation and appearances, Sam can't help but feel as if God doesn't exist. And that feeling is only compounded when a local girl is kidnapped, turning her whole community upside down.

Once Was Lost is a blunt novel of faith and what happens when everything you believed in is changed irrevocably. Sam is a very convincing and relatable character that readers will be able to connect with on any level, especially as her doubt about her beliefs is something that nearly ever person has confronted at least once in their lifetime. She brings up issues that some people may not think about, like not being included with friends because of her beliefs and who her father is. Zarr also does an excellent job at portraying the tense setting as the whole town deals with the kidnapping and fear begins to control others and accusations are slung left and right.

The best thing about Once Was Lost though is that it doesn't concentrate on the all of the things that go wrong, like the kidnapping, Sam's mother's DUI, or inappropriate relationships, but rather examines its affect on Sam and her faith. Once Was Lost isn't a hugely dramatic novel full of twists and turns, but it is a gripping, sometimes heartbreaking look at how ordinary people learn to deal with a less than perfect world. Zarr's latest book is an excellent, non-preachy look at faith and religion that any reader, believer or not, can enjoy.

Quiet and thoughtful

Sara Zarr took inspiration from the Elizabeth Smart disappearance and ran with it to a completely different place, filled with authentic experience and emotion, one that speaks to adults and young adults. It's a novel about faith and doubt when the world intrudes upon already shaky ground, inevitable during the coming of age years, recurring in the adult ones. I believed in the characters, have known people like them, saw bits of myself in several. This isn't light reading, but I was engrossed and never felt preached at during the journey of self-discovery and faith seeking. This isn't a Christian novel, per se, but handles the questions and concerns better than many of the books published specifically for that market. Overall, it is about losing the safety of childhood and discovering one's own faith along the way. Zarr doesn't offer easy solutions or trite answers, but they are real ones, at least for this character and I was fully invested in all of them by the end of the book.

Review: Once was Lost

This is only the second christian fiction book that I have read. This was amazing read for me at the juncture in my life. I have found what I have been missing and growing in my own spirituality, so this book was very enjoyable and inspiring for me at this time. I loved Sammy's character; she effectively portrays the wandering christian that is in need of guidance. She is the child that has been had the adult guidance, but now needs to re-evaluate and decide on the future of her own spirituality. In Once was Lost Sara Zarr created a world that is easy to relate and believeable. The sins and struggles that were previewed in this book kept it honest and humbling. Her ability to combined a entertaining young adult read with a lesson shows true talent. I look forward to see what else this author has to offer.

About the Author
Frank Viva is an award-winning author/illustrator and graphic designer. His illustrations have appeared on the cover of The New Yorker, in The New York Times and many other places. His first picture book Along a Long Road was a 2011 New York Times Best Illustrated Book. He has published seven books and his work has been translated into ten languages. Making books is his favorite thing to do.

STUNNING AND UNIQUE! This work deserves more than the five stars I am able to assign it.

When it comes to children's literature it is becoming more and more difficult to find something that you can truly call "different;" something unique that grabs you and causes you to say to yourself, "Good grief, I've never seen anything quite like this before." Considering that illustrated children's books, in one fashion or another have been with us since at least the 15th or 16th century, the likelihood of producing something absolutely new is quite small.

Well, Frank Viva has come pretty near creating a completely new work here. Yes, there are books out there where some of the elements of this work can be found, but Viva has taken many of these elements and come-up with something that I feel is truly a bit different.

This is the story of a man on a bicycle trip; a short day trip really, or just a trip from home to perhaps his office and then back home. The starting point and the ending point really matter little in this case as it is the journey that counts; it is what this simple story is about. A man begins his journey on his bike. He followings a never ending road though the countryside, through small villages, goes by the sea, through tunnels, across bridges, into the big city, though neighborhoods and then beyond. He starts but really, never finishes...and if he does finish, well.....

The author has used a yellow road; a twisting, turning, up and down road that connects each frame of the book. The illustrations are really all one very long and large picture of the man's journey. It is really rather difficult to describe, but I assure you it is absolutely delightful. These illustrations are accompanied by a wonderfully simple text...short two, three and four word entries that have an almost hypnotic effect and most certainly can be classified and mellow.

"Along a long road
gaining speed
Again
and again and again
Around a round bend
near the end........"

Each of the above lines are a line of text which are placed on one page; one part of the overall illustration.

And the illustration! My, oh my! The author/artist has used precisely five colors throughout the entire book with jet black being the primary back ground color; the back ground on which the road runs. The lines are simple, precise and the colors have not been blended, but whether they are straight or curved, they simply flow. The illustrator has a very quirky eye and apparently views life though a different lens than most of us.

This is an ideal book to read to or with a child. As the rider passes though on his journey the sights he sees and the different scenes that pass, leave so very many side stories that the adult reader can use with the child as this work is being read. With the simple act of passing through a village, with a river and ship in the background, At least five side stories that I can tell a child passed through my mind...this was on just two frames!

This work is a visual treat, a mellow read, a pure delight for eye and ear and imagination. This is one you most certainly will want to add to your child's library.

The author and illustrator of this work has had work that has appeared on the cover o the New Yorker and his work has appeared in the New York Times, Boston Globe and Time Magazine. This is his first children's book...amazing and how remarkable.

Take a ride 'Along a Long Road'

Roads wind through towns, across countrysides and through cities. They are what connect people to each other.

In "Along a Long Road" by Frank Viva, readers follow a never-ending road from page to page without a break. The road, highlighted in yellow and with a smooth texture, stands out as it winds across the pages.

The road crosses through trees, under power lines, around a small town, into a tunnel, over a bridge and going really, really fast.

Limited to primary colors, the illustrations here are graphic in nature and play to the movement of the winding road. And the physical texture of the road is a nice touch. Unfortunately the review copy I received, the UV coating was not completely dry when the book was assembled and it stuck together, leaving a tear near the spine. It's a small tear, however, and only slightly detracts from the book as a whole.

There's little text to "Along a Long Road," but it's really not needed. It's a fun little book that children will appreciate for its movement and that parents will appreciate for its artistic merit.

The picture rare book that is perfect for young babies

I found this book while searching some new picture books for my 7 month old son...At an age where he has become mobile and opinionated seemingly overnight, the other picture books in his library, which were once so easy to read to him when he was the perfect, captive audience a few months ago, now seemed to test his patience and interest with their lengthy text and muted colors (except the great Dr. Seuss of course). Furthermore, I find most board books for babies his age to be TOO simple and lacking in terms of illustration and design...Thus, I was excited to find "Along a Long Road" and even more delighted when it became my son's first ever favorite book! The illustrations are high-contrast with pops of color & the story is just-right in terms of length for the infant-toddler range...I look forward to more from Frank Viva down the road;)

This is an excellent summary of a very complex subject. The only reason it has 4 stars instead of 5 is that is not a user friendly text. It's written for someone who has been legally trained, so you may have to read some passages more than once to understand them.

At 5'3", Bogues is the shortest player ever to play for an NBA team. Born in 1965 and raised in public housing projects in Baltimore, he distinguished himself on the court at Dunbar High School, where, during his junior and senior years, the team won 59 consecutive games. At Wake Forest University, Bogues encountered not racism but prejudice against students on athletic scholarships as dumb jocks. He was picked by the Washington Bullets of the NBA, with whom he had a disappointing rookie season, then went to the Charlotte Hornets and led them into the 1992-93 season playoffs. A dynamo and a sparkplug on the court, this starting point guard has been called "a damn pest" and "your worst nightmare" by opponents. Readers will find his autobiography, written with Levine (Life on the Rim), as exciting as a fast break. Photos not seen by PW.

YA?Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues is 5'3" tall and is a professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets. His story begins in the Baltimore projects where, against all odds, he excelled at the sport. People who laughed at him for trying to compete with six and seven-foot players stopped after he helped his high school teammates go to the state championships, and he played outstandingly at Wake Forest. He ended up with the expansion team that went to the NBA playoffs within five years, leading his team. In conjunction with sports writer David Levine, Bogues has created a delightful autobiography. He writes with charming candor of his pride in his family, his friendships with such stars as Reggie Williams and Alonzo Mourning, and his extensive community work. He explains with gentle humor the obstacles he had to overcome and his strong determination to succeed in such a competitive sport. The list of worthwhile autobiographies of sports personalities is small. However, the story of basketball's diminutive overachiever (he's just over five feet tall) is a book that should be read, particularly by young adults who think they aren't big or smart enough. Bogues's life is memorable for the obstacles he overcame (poverty, size, and a dysfunctional family) to become a star in high school, college, and then professional basketball. Many would say that being a National Basketball Association star is not the only road out of the ghetto, and while this is true, the fact that Bogues was successful when so many are not makes his story important. There are far too few positive role models available to young black men. Bogues is, and should continue to be, an inspirational figure. Highly recommended for high school and public libraries.

A great, motivational read

This is a really good book about a basketball player who overcame his great height disadvantage to become an NBA superstar. This book takes you through the basketball career of Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues. All his life he was shorter than everone on the basketball court. Can you imagine how it's like playing in the NBA when you are on average about 1.5 feet shorter than every one else? That's how Muggsy Bogues has played for his whole life.
Yet he persevered and overcame his height. His basketball career was by no means all easy and problem-free, and many people doubted that someone who was 5'3 could play basketball with guys who were 7 foot tall. But in this book Muggsy shows that height doesn't determine whether or not you can play basketball. Heart and skill are what determine how well you play. From his wonderful high school basketball days to his terrible rookie year days in the NBA, the reader sees how Muggsy overcame his height to become a great point guard. His assist and stealing ability proved vital to the success or the Hornets. You have to admire the little fella'.

i thougt that this was a great book for any fan of muggsy bogues, or basketball itsself. if you are a fan of muggsy and do not already have this book, you should definately but it. it all the facts you need to know and great up-to-date pictures. this is a great atleast 5 star book. The main reason i liked this book so much is because i am a long time fan and it told me things, or facts that i had never known about the great muggsy bogues. all the information is great, and correct. also, the chapters have very catchy titles, and you will never get bored of this book. i would like to give mad props to muggsy, of course, and the author for making such a great book.

The Hostile Takeover enters a New Age

A well-written and efficient book. While 'Barbarians at the Gate' still sets the standard on takeover books, 'Cold Steel' is (pardon the pun) a steal. It is an analysis of the hard fought cross-border takeover that became the artiface of a merger between Mittal Steel and Arcelor. Unlike some of its predecessors in the genre, Bouquet and Ousey take the reader through the various layers of complexity - financial, legal, political, personal, and social - to truly explain how steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal was able to takeover the Luxembourg based Arcelor. A book that wil delight lovers of business journalism and those with an interest in the weavings of big European business and the larger-than-life figures astride it. Only a superficial comment can be made against the book, the authors had not purchased any rights to photographs of the main participants which would have painted a better picture in the mind of the reader. I hope those who are interested in learning about the future impact of emerging BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India & China) economies will read this. A must for those studying business degrees as it introduces the element that academic texts can leave out - the role of personalities and bias that distort the rational decision-making process and create unpredictability.

Excellent business book

Cold Steel

This is an excellent book. It is a thrilling read for just entertainment purposes but also serves to educate how a deal as complex as Arcelor-Mittal merger can be executed in a hostile environment.
It includes lots of insights into the public relations aspects but as a minor disadvantage is not too easily understandable on the complex legal and financial structures. This could obviously be caused by the stupidity of this reviewer, but I would have liked that several complicated items are explained in more depth, such as:
- the stichting. It remained unclear to me how exactly can the ultimate separation of the voting power be achieved. For example, is there a way back or the voting rights are gone forever if the trustees do not want to rescind?
- there is no explanation to why did the competitors of Mittal initially support the consolidation of a dominant competitor;
- the revised scheme for Severstal on p.284 contains all the important data for understanding, but if expanded could be more easily comprehendable.

On p. 95, hedge funds are described as "locusts" and having "incestuous" practices:) no problem with that except it sounded as quite out of balance.

As said these were minor drawbacks to a very good business book that I have scribbled full of notes and intend to use several times in the future.

Reads like a fast paced thriller

The book makes for interesting reading but provides a very shallow explanation of the financial procedures/dealings. While reading I also got the impression that the authors are inclined towards the Mittals-a certain bias comes through. Though this could be because of little or no information from participants on the other side...On the whole worth reading but will definitely look forward to a book that delves into this event in more detail.
