Excellent Exposition of Health Reform

The product description of this book is accurate and fairly stated. Although this book is designed to supplement the authors' sixth edition health law text, this book can be used independetly or with another text. This book is excellent in a class in federal health care regulation, along with a standard text in federal administrative regulation. The authors fully grasp and clearly articulate the significance of health reform from a health policy as well as legal perspective, including, for example, cogent discussion of the highly interdependent three goals of PPACA as amended: increasing access, improving quality, and containing costs. Students like the book very much. I will also require it along with the authors' equally excellent unabridged sixth edition health law text in basic health law classes. I recommend it highly for use in health law and related classes, and for individual reading by lawyers and health professionals.

This book is horribly written, contains numerous typos, and really adds nothing to the text of the statute itself. Save your money and just print up the statute.

My local librarian asked me why there was a long list of requests for Cheerful Money. "It must be good," she said. When I told her that it really wasn't very good she said, "well, it must have some kind of appeal." And it does...to a limited audience.

First of all, Cheerful Money is indeed not a very good book, but it will find a place in the genre of Wasp chronicles. The structure is meandering. At points the book is truly boring. And the characters never really come to life. I could see these flaws when I spent about 30 minutes in the aisle of my local book store giving it a speed-read and deciding that it was not worth buying. And yet, a few weeks later I was one of those who requested it from the library. I think if you have little or a lot of WASP in you or have lived close to one or many of them you are drawn to reading about this world and its dissolution in the second half of the 20th century. Maybe I needed that assurance that the WASP world had lost its relevance so I would feel safe in abandoning any aspirations that might have lingered from my own Seven Sister/ Ivy League college days.

Admittedly I skipped over many paragraphs and at least twice considering abandoning the book. But I was glad I finished it, even though the whole bit towards the end about the author's psychoanalysis and failed relationships was lame. Mr Friend is a good writer, better than shows in this book. He has a knack for finding just the right metaphor.

You will enjoy the book if you are interested in a glimpse into this bygone world. For a tighter and more interesting narrative of the same subject, George Colt's Big House has more poignancy and a surer social (as well as artistic) compass.

not interesting. at all.

i could not get into this book. whether these people are wasps or not is irrelevant to the fact that their story is just not that interesting. perhaps because the author is trying so hard to make these rather boring (and often small minded) people into characters who are interesting when they are not, the book seems forced. everyday events are tortured and over interpreted in order to make them seem significant. there are a a small number of scenes involving the author's parents which are worthwhile but in general the book is trying too hard to make the mundane seem somehow interesting.

I wish I could write a higher-starred review...

Tad Friend wrote a book about which another Amazon reviewer has written, "should be published privately for his family". I agree with those sentiments. Friend's writing is fine; the subject matter - his family and other WASPs he has known - and their mating, spending, educational proclivities, is just basically boring after a while.

The other thing that I thought lacking in the book was a proper "family tree". Friend includes one at the beginning of the book - and noted that it wasn't complete - and then proceeds to write about several close relatives, grandparents, aunts, and uncles who were not on the tree. I would have loved to know their "dates" and relationships with others in the family, but sadly, they weren't included. For instance, he writes about a cousin(?) named Norah Pierson, from his mother's side. She - and her sister - were non-conformists in the Pierson family. (Norah Pierson was a highly regarded jeweler out here in Santa Fe before her death). Even by closely searching the family tree, I couldn't find that branch.

The other reviews of this book on Amazon seem to run the gauntlet between five and one stars. Maybe it's not bad that Tad Friend's book evoked such a diverse range of opinion. It means readers are reading and thinking.

Book was damaged at delivery, so I returned it; but what I saw was disappointing, very dull drab pictures, not an attracting looking book at all. Did not look interesting or inviting. Was sorry I ordered it in the first place.

this Book truly showcases Black women in full detail. this Book captures Black Women over and 50 and Beyond with there words,Wisdom and uplift. Connie Briscoe does a fantastic job at interviewing. all 50 women. Michael Cunningham does a Great Job here as well. you hear stories of overcoming so many obstacles and maintaining a level of still striving for more. you learn that a strong upbringing and Love along with family made these Women strive for more than what was said or expected. Ruby Dee looks fantastic and is timeless as are the other African-American Women Profiled in this Book. very enlightening and detailed.

In this breezy, soft-pedaling exercise in spiritual empowerment, Braestrup (Here If You Need Me) shares some of her hard-won marital wisdom. As an ordained minister, Braestrup counsels couples to love and cherish one another, even in the face of a 50% divorce rate, and asserts that of the three kinds of love known in ancient biblical Greek—eros, philos, and agape—the greatest is the last. Translated into Latin as charitas, agape is the generous, selfless love given unconditionally and best mimics the nature of God's love. Braestrup traces her own call to the ministry to the aftermath of the shocking sudden death of her policeman husband, Drew, killed in a car accident in 1996, when her family and friends rallied around her and the couple's four children with abundant love and care. She reveals that not long before his death, the couple had suffered a marital crisis and sought counseling for what the author considered clearly Drew's incurable character disorder; however, she was jolted from the brink by the thought of their losing each other. Employing examples of the couples she knows, such as game warden Jeremy Judd and his betrothed, town dispatcher Melanie, who sought the author's advice as they embarked on their marriage, as well as a soon-to-be-divorced couple, Jesse and Georgiana, Braestrup offers grains of folksy, charitable wisdom. MARRIAGE & other acts of CRUELTY

My husband took a look at the cover of this book and laughed, as he thought the title said "cruelty" rather than "charity". When I corrected him I realized that, in fact, it is a bit of both.

Kate Braestrup had some excellent points to make in this memoir, lessons she has learned from experiencing and observing the male/female relationship. One that stuck with me was that "100% of relationships end". We are lucky if they end after a long, happy life together, but the fact is some relationships are cut short. Whether it be through untimely death, divorce or things beyond our control we should learn to appreciate every moment. We should focus on the happiness, not the frustrations of a relationship if we want it to thrive.

Unfortunately for Kate, she learned some of her lessons the hard way. Fortunately for us, she shares her learned wisdom and sprinkles it with some faith filled touches.

I would not consider this a "religious" book, though she is a minister and faith is obviously important to her story. What I can say is that this felt a bit like a series of parables with a very neutral point of view. There may be meaning to each of her chapters, but nothing that felt as if she was leading the reader to a biased conclusion.

The only complaint I have about the book is that it can come off as a bit intellectual because of the language. For example, most of us do not use the following words in everyday conversation(at least not in my New England town): imprimatur, salvific, palimpsest,inchoate,construal, cosseted and extracanonical to name only a few. I would have preferred that this be written in a lighter tone. It's very down-to-earth in theme, so the "big words" felt out of place.

That said, this was an interesting read and provided some thoughtful insight which I enjoyed and I think you will,too.

Another winner for Kate!

As a Mainer, I particularly enjoy Kate's writings. I know the places that she's talking of and I think that helps the book to be more "real" and applicable to my own life. I must say I really enjoyed this book. It didn't focus so much on her marriage (s) as it did the institution of marriage. Yes she uses some "big" words and faith to get her point across, but it isn't over done.

As many poignant moments are in this book, there are just as many funny ones. My personal favorite was her children's pronounciation of her second husband's name. (You'll know it when you get to it!) This is an excellent Sunday afternoon book, soft and quiet, deep and insightful.

Another Moving Memoir From a Beautiful Writer

I read Kate Braestrup's award-winning first memoir "Here If You Need Me" as background before I read this--her latest book--and I'm so glad I did, because she is someone I wanted to know more about. It was helpful, but certainly not necessary, as this memoir stands alone. Together, the two are a wonderful read.

Marriage and Other Acts of Charity is about the author's experiences with not only marriage, but life, love, God, parenting, organized religion, motherhood, grief, spirituality, and creating meaning when it seems impossible. I found this a beautiful book, another stunning memoir filled with poignant stories and hard lessons learned. The author has keen insights and a fresh way of looking at the world. She also has a great sense of humor.

Although the author is a minister, this is not really a religious book. No matter what you believe, you will be comfortable with this book. Rev. Braestrup works in the Unitarian Universalist church, a denomination that is known for being tolerant and inclusive; reading her memoir made me really like Unitarians. It made me feel like there is maybe even a place for me in a church that is devoid of mean theology. This is a peaceful and loving book for people of all faiths or no faiths.

It is about love and where and how you find it. And about the challenges that looking for it everywhere poses. You'll find the stories unforgettable.

At the start of Zouroudi's intriguing first in a series based on the seven deadly sins, self-styled investigator Hermes Diaktoros (aka "the fat man") arrives from Athens on the island of Thiminos to look into the death of Irini Asimakopoulos, a young woman whose body was found at the foot of a high cliff. Irini's sad story unfolds slowly as Hermes, who can ask questions gently or demand answers gruffly, talks to a number of people involved, including Irini's husband, Andreas; her putative lover, Theo Hatzistratis; Theo's wife, Elpida; and the island's police chief, Panayiotis Zafiridis, who officially deemed her death an accident but privately believes it was suicide. The secrets the locals keep or share can't be hidden from Hermes, who weighs the evidence and, in the end, rewards or punishes in ways that have little to do with written laws. Zouroudi writes well, but this leisurely tale is more likely to appeal to armchair travelers interested in Greece than mystery buffs.

Pleasantly Surprised

I went into this book not really knowing what to expect, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I picked it solely based on cover.

The small Greek island is set more or less in present day, but it's one of those timeless places that makes the story read more like a folk tale - which is good. When a man referred to mostly as 'the fat man' shows up to investigate the death of a local woman, he goes about his business despite the protestations of the corrupt local 2-man police force, who have declared the death a suicide.

We are drawn into the story several ways. One story follows the fat man as he investigates. He follows the word on the street, but is also surprisingly knowledgeable about all things involved, and gets to the heart of the matter with each person he questions. In his satchel, he is able to pull out the perfect thing to thank each person or convince them of his intent. We are never told exactly who is he, who he works for, why he is there, or how he knows anything. When justice is done, it is fair and perfect.

We also see the story through the eyes of Irini, the woman who died, Andreas her husband, and Theo her lover. Some of these asides are flashbacks that alternate with the fat man's chapter, and some happen concurrently with the fat man's investigation. The juxtaposition of these stories works very well to make you care for an understand the motivations of all the characters.

I really enjoyed this book and will be looking for more from the author.

Bleak Mystery of the Greek Islands

In many ways, I feel that I am not a good reviewer for The Messenger of Athens. Sometimes a book works for you and sometimes it does not. I gave it a good rating, though, because I felt it was a good book for the right audience (even though I was not that audience). I love the Greek islands and had hoped this would be an intriguing mystery in one of my favorite locales.

The story takes place on the island of Thiminos and it is a terrible, bleak place. The inhabitants are depressed and bored with their restricted lives, and have litttle (no) ambition to change their lives. They rise each day--if they even bother to get out of bed--only to see the graveyard outside their window, reminding them of the pointlessness of their lives. Only the victim's uncle seems to have had any kind of a life at all, as he traveled in his youth and remembers South America (mostly the ladies of the night) with fondness. Sadly, his neice is subjected to rumors of cheating on her husband and is found dead at the bottom of a cliff.

Hermes Diaktoros, described mostly as "The Fat Man" arrives to investigate her death. His trademark appears to be an obsession with keeping his white sneakers white with the shoe polish he carries around.

I'm afraid I had difficulties caring about the characters, or the mystery of why the neice died. If I was her uncle living in that depressing place, I'd have been inclined to serve a little cyanide along with the coffee.

That's why I believe this was simply not the book for me.

The writing was good and the mystery had a satisfying end. If you like mysteries with a more "literary" flavor, then you will appreciate the atmospheric writing, as well as glimpses into how bleak life can really be on a Greek island. I guess it's not all sunshine and turquoise ocean waves.

Hard going, inauthentic

Right from the beginning this book is hard to follow, as the author opens with a death scene that is vaguely depicted . She is plays "hide the ball" by introducing characters without saying who they are, keeping us in the dark but not telling enough to pique our interest.

Then there are jumps in time, long winded flowery descriptions that slow down what little actual action is taking place, and a preponderance of characters being introduced, both in the "present" time of the investigation and the flashbacks to the events that lead to the death of the main character.

but despite long descriptions, the characters are short changed. The protagonist, the detective, is pretty much just a "fat man" and not much more. He barely makes an appearance in the first 50 pages.
We get a better sense of the floor in the room he enters than we do of the man himself.
I guess this makes him inscrutable (yawn) or perhaps identifiable as an "everyman" or at the very least an "every fat man". Other characters are simply the one "missing several fingers" or the one "without teeth". I guess on Greek Islands most people are defined more by what they don't have than by what they are. Except of course in the case of the fat man, who is defined by what he has too much of.

What this book has too much of is descriptive phrases, but again, don't let that fool you:
The long descriptions don't really give you any better sense of place or , more importantly, of it's people. We know more about Uncle Nikos' chair than about his person.

Several people seem to have had affairs with several others, several characters seem to be related to each other. There's lots of stuff involving the preparation of sea food and there's a lot of stuff about digging up old bones to make room for new corpses in the cemetery. It's that kind of book.

Worst of all, there is the all too familiar attitude and writing style typical of an author from the UK attempting to capture the spirit and attitude of another culture:
We are supposed to believe we are reading a story about Greek people steeped in Greek culture and yet they say things to each other like "bugger all". The number of quintessentially english expressions spoken by supposedly greek people mounts very quickly in the first hundred pages of the book. There are more english idioms and speech patterns than there are Octopi corpses (yes, there are a lot of them, for those for whom no mystery is complete without several octopus barbecues to keep things moving along).

I always try to give any book over 100 pages before giving up on it. In this case, I went well past 100 pages because I felt guilty about having started skimming portions where daybreak was being described in loving detail for those who've never experienced it themselves...
I finally gave up when I got to the graphic description of the slaughter of a goat.
I decided to spare the goat and trash the book.
