About the Author
Luis Alberto Urrea is author of widely acclaimed novel The Hummingbird's Daughter and 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist for nonfiction for The Devil's Highway. A member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame, Luis was born in Tijuana, Mexico to a Mexican father and an American mother.

Not Your Typical Border-Crossing Story

I loved this book! I am a second language reader in Spanish and really enjoyed the conversations between the characters. The slang was so much fun and even a little challenging at times. Urrea has captured the language and the interactions of teens and has faithfully recreated life in a small Mexican town, Tijuana, and "los Unites." The book took me back to my travels as a young adult in Mexico and to my former students' lives as they tried to negotiate the reality of life on both sides of the border.
