Otherwise, it is highly recommended.

This Book Rocks

I love this book because I love snowboarding. In this book, two brothers have a contest to see who is better at snowboarding. Freddie and Donovan tease each other a lot. Donovan won't admit that Freddie is a better athlete. Freddie and his friends all think that he is better than Donovan. I also liked this book because the brothers play pig and I love to play pig. This book is exciting because you don't really know what happens next, things sort of pop out at you when you don't really expect it. You should read this book because it has action and is fun.

... I really liked this book. I liked it because I am a really sporty girl. I you like stories with sport adventures and a pretty easy reading level you would like this book. This book is also a fun book to read. When I read a lot of the book at one time I could barely put it down. If you think reading is nerdy then try this book. You will think very different about reading after this book. I thought I was going to hate this book but I ended up loving it. I hope you take my advise and read this book. You won't be sorry.

Freddie and his big brother, Donavon, are always competing becouse they want to be better than the other one. Donavon dares Freddie to go down a slope that only 2 people have gone down without getting hurt. Freddie goes does on his snowboard. You won't be able to put down this book. It is exciting when Freddie sets up a snowboarding tournament. It is a story of frienship, brotherhoo, and competition. It is really good.

After meeting Red Auerbach, the legendary Boston Celtic coach and de facto father of the modern NBA, a few years ago, Feinstein wangled an invitation to a regular Tuesday lunch in Washington, D.C., where Auerbach and various of his cronies trade stories. Feinstein became a regular, which led to this anecdotal autobiography of a genuine sports icon. Auerbach won nine NBA titles as the Celtics' coach, and he added another seven as the team's general manager. Naturally, he has lots of opinions about the game of basketball, as it's played today and as it was played in his prime. He also has plenty to say about both Bill Russell, the key player on all of his championship teams, and Wilt Chamberlain, Russell's nemesis, and he discusses his Depression-era youth and early years as an itinerant coach. Many of Red's stories are familiar, but hearing the first-person versions is a treat. Auerbach's life and memories form the plot of Feinstein's book, but a strong subtext is the friendship among the dozen or so regulars who make it to the restaurant each week. In fact, the book is as much about the lunches as it is about Auerbach. We watch as a group of older men pass their wisdom on to those they have come to view as worthy successors. Pleasant Book with Plenty of Fun and Engaging Stories

Since John Feinstein's debut book, 1987's unexpected breakout smash-hit "A Season on the Brink", he has been cranking out about one book a year, a veritable franchise! "Let Me Tell You a Story" is his 16th book, albeit credited to co-writer Red Auerbach. I am neither a Celtic fanatic, or even a big NBA fan for that matter, but I am a sucker for a good story teller, and boy, I was not disappointed.

"Let Me Tell You a Story" (346 pages) grew from Feinstein attencing the weekly luncheon get-togethers that Auerbach holds every Tuesday in a Chinese restaurant in Washington DC. One thing lead to another, and before we know it, we have a book containing many of those fun and entertaining stories of hoe Auerbach broke into basketball, got into coaching at the NBA when the league was started, and eventually coached and later general-managed the Celtics into the league's powerhouse. I didn't know that Auerbach's life was centered in Washington, even when he coached the Celtics. As a George Washington U. graduate myself, it was fun to find out how big a supporter Auerbach is of the GW basketball program (Auerbach is an GW alum himself, class of 1940). The story about how he had GW finally get some really good hot dogs at the games nowadays, is hilarious.

Auerbach is an impressive person, with a memory of steel. His recollections of the early days are priceless, and Feinstein writes them up in an effortless and entertaining way. Is this a "deep" book? Of course not, but it sure makes for a great read.

Saturday Afternoon Morality Play

If your sports memories are in black and white TV format, and go back to Gus Johnson, Jack Marin, and The Pearl twirling it for the Washington Bullets, Wilt (Russell's Trademark Foil) and Hal Greer lurking up in Philly, Elgin and the Cabin Creek Commando waiting Out West...with The Good Guys - Bill Russell and Bailey Howell and Hondo and Heinsohn and Don Nelson and all the rest - looming above it all, then you'll want to hear every story Red Auerbach has to tell.

There are few more annoying individuals in print than Jr. Feinstein; at some point, you realize whatever he's writing is "about him"... but I've not yet been able to resist his chatty, insider trading approach to sports biography, beginning with A Season on the Brink. Feinstein has a great ear for the way people speak, an insatiable curiosity for how folks got where they are, and delights in the web that brings people together. That's never more apparent as he unravels what brought each man to the China Doll, each Tuesday, at 11am SHARP!

This is a loving, smart tribute (with some of Feinstein's trademark tattle tale snide stuff sprinkled throughout) to a loving, smart man. It's also a great tale of friendship, and a reminder of how those of us with mentors must never squander a chance to spend time with them. Coach Knight keeps a note on his desk to call Red once a month; we'd all be well served to do the same to keep in touch with those who still have much to give.

Opinions From A Master Storyteller

I am not a big fan of basketball, but I do remember Red Auerbach when he coached the Boston Celtics. Red and many of his friends have weekly Tuesday get-togethers at the China Doll Restaurant in Washington, D.C. where they swap stories with one another. Red gives his opinions on coaches today who he feels overcoach their team and often play to the cameras and fans by jumping up and down and screaming with their team up by 20 or 30 points with a minute or two in the game. Red's rule for winning is simple: Get good players who are good people and you will have a winning team. People say Red was a great coach because he had great players. But, the author adds, "Who do you think chose the players?" Red always has had a good relationship with Bobby Knight. Knight said, "He (Red) was nice to me for no reason years ago and he never stopped." A pet peeve of his is P.A. announcers who mumble the names of the visiting players during introductions and then boost up the P.A. system when the home team is introduced "as if they just saved the planet." Red finally gave up coaching at the age of forty eight due to exhaustion. Dealing with having to scout and being a general manager and keeping the team's talent pool coming had worn him out. Reading this book is a learning experience for coaches on all levels, and I am proof you don't have to be a basketball fan to enjoy the book.

A favorite of both my one and three year old boys

We love the Raffi version of the song, De Colores, and I decided to buy this book to help illustrate the lyrics. It does so in a simple yet beautiful way. My one year old pulls this book out and flips through the pages and often asks me to sing with it. My three year old always comes over at that point to hear and look at the pictures.

Finding Spanish-English Bilingual Board Books has been a challenge but we're so glad we happened upon Ashley Wolff. The book illustrates a traditional children's song with animals and objects little eyes are sure to recognize. This is one board book we don't mind reading over and over again.

The best text available for teachers of public speaking.

If you are interested in teaching public speaking or in coaching competitive speech and debate teams, I believe this is the book you need. It is the best text for teachers of public speaking I have ever seen. It is especially valuable to those who are involved in competitive public speaking activities because it addresses the issues of ethics in competition as well as the specifics of contest rules and how to prepare for contests. The organization of the text facilitates use with speech and debate teams as well as regular classes. The activities which are included with each chapter are useful. In short, it is a book any teacher of speech and/or debate should have.

Viviana's Book Review on Skateboard Tough

Matt Christopher wrote the book Skateboard Tough in 1994. This book is about a boy named Brett that wanted a new skateboard because his old board was scratched up. His mom decided to have a garage installed and during construction Brett finds a buried chest in his front yard. Inside the chest it contained a blue and white striped skateboard with the word lizard painted on the base. Brett discovers that the skateboard gives him good luck, helps him to do tricks that he could not do before, but it causes everyone else to have bad luck. For example, his sister's best friend Sharon, when she tried to ride the lizard, she fell off the board, almost got ran over by a car, and received several injuries. Everyone tells Brett that the skateboard is cursed and he does not believe them. In my opinion, I think it was a bad decision for Brett to continue riding the skateboard because everyone was getting hurt physically each time when Brett used the board. Since Brett ignored the warnings of his friends; they decided to ignore him. Brett was left feeling lonely and depressed, which lead him to bury the skateboard back in the front yard. Afterwards, Brett started using his old skateboard again, told his friends that he buried the lizard and apologized to his friends for ignoring their warnings about the board being cursed. In the end Brett learns that he cannot always get what he wants. I would not recommend this book because the story line did not keep my attention. Maybe if the author, Matt Christopher, added in more action and adventure this book could have been more exciting. Otherwise, skateboarders would really enjoy this book because it included many descriptions of the tricks.

Skateboard Tough is a story about a little children that digs up a skateboard in his front yard. This kids name is Brett Thyson and he has one passion. That is to be a very good skateboarder. He's not the only skateboarder in the town, take Kyle Robinson for instance. Brett has always wanted to be a better skateboarder than Kyle. The skateboard he dug up used to belong to a professional skateboarder named Lance Hawker, according to some other kids in the neighborhood. The witch down the street gives the kids quite a surprise after Brett writes a letter to the local newspaper. The skateboard that he had found in his front yard is supposed to be "Magical." He can do any trick on it and he likes it a lot. Everyone else doesn't think it is fair although he just is happy he found it first. Brett has always wanted to beat Kyle in a competition. The problem is that there is no competition in the town.
Something that I liked about this book is the realism in the tricks that the young skateboarders did. Although I don't really think that just because a skateboard belonged to a professional doesn't mean that it can be magical. Also I liked the feud between all the young skaters. W.E, Kyle Robinson, Johnee, Shannon, everyone argued about being a better skater. Even though they were friends they still fought about things. I know I used to fight with my friends and other kids as I was skating down the street performing my nice moves. And whenever Brett skated past Kyle, an argument would always break out unless Kyle knew that Brett was better than him.
I recommend this book to young children, at least in the sixth grade. I personally did not like the book myself because I felt it was too childish for me. So hopefully young readers would love this easy read, Skateboard Tough by Matt Christopher

Skate Board Tough

Skate board tough is a good book for people who like skating. The plot is that the kid likes to skate but has a bad board and he finds one in the ground. The board is like magic and makes him skate good. The setting is at his home most of the time and on the side walk and athe end at the skate park. The conflict of this story is that the board he found used to belong to a dead person. another conflict is that he has nowhere to skate. The resolution is that his friend's dad builds a skate park and that he becomes a really good skater just like the dead boy that used to own the board.

Johnny Long Legs

Many events take place in the story Johnny Long Legs. In the beginning of the book Johnny moves to New York City with his mom to live with his mom's boyfriend and his son. Soon after the son (Toby) asks Johnny to join the schools basketball team. Johnny figured why not he had played some in New York so he figured he'd give it a try. All of the kids thought that Johnny was going to an awesome player because he was so tall and had probably played a lot in New York. In the first few games Johnny doesn't do to great. He isn't great at shooting and can't jump to save his life. This shocked people because of his height. Johnny would always loose on jump balls now matter how small the kid was and how hard he tried. Fans began calling Johnny "Lead foot" and "Johnny Long Legs". Johnny practiced jumping whenever he could and finally outjumped his toughest opponent at the end of the story. Johnny was finally proud of his nickname "Johnny Long Legs".

My favorite part of the book was when Johnny out jumped his rival opponent and tough competitor Jim Sain. They had been neck and neck or hand and hand shall we say all year. I thought this part of the book was great because Johnny realized that all the hard work he did to strengthen his legs and to improve his jump really did pay off.

I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys sports novels Matt Christopher is a great sports writer in my opinion and great for kids. Also if you want a page turning book this is definitely a book for you! There was a lot of excitement and intensity in this book. I feel that this book was a quick and easy but awesome read!

I gave the book Johnny Long Legs a rating of four stars. I gave this book four stars because it talks about Johnny's basketball games alot and they are a little hard to follow if you were not very good at reading. Also in the games the same thing happens most of the time. I think this story had a good plot but the ending could have been better. I would recommend this book to the age group from 9 years old to 12 years old. I think this book would intrest these age groups because it has problems this age group would be going through. Also because it is about sports and it's at that age goups reading level. I found this book very easy to read and I thought the print was a good size. Another thing I also enjoyed was that the characters were easy to relate to and they were funny.
