About the Author
Rachel Maude grew up in Hollywood, California, where she studied illustration at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. She attended UCLA and received a Masters in Dramatic Writing from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Rachel is already hard at work on her next novel in the Poseur series, so kick off your clogs and burn your scrunchies; all fashion crimes will be noted.

A light and fluffy, fabulously fashionable read

Janie Farrish, scholarship student at LA's exclusive Winston Prep, lives for vintage clothing sales and sketching. Charlotte Beverwil, Francophile, thinks that with her love of lace and ruffles she must have been born a century too late. Everyone at school is sure that hippie Petra Greene, who routinely shows up for school in organic cotton and hemp clothing, has had plastic surgery. And egomaniac Melissa Moon wants to turn herself into her own brand.
All four turn in suggestions for independent study classes at Winston Prep, and while individually their proposals weren't great, the independent studies counselor saw potential in their combined abilities. All of them wanted a class that had something to do with fashion and marketing, so the lamely-named Trend Set class was born. Together, Janie, Charlotte, Petra and Melissa have the perfect amount of talent, knowledge and creativity to launch a successful fashion line.
What's the problem?
They hate each other.
Despite their mutual interest in fashion, the four girls can't agree on anything about the fashion line that will be the defining project of their independent study. Melissa wants to plan the launch party before they even have clothes. Charlotte thinks that $200 is fine to spend on materials for an outfit, but Jamie doesn't plan to spend more than $20 on hers. As for Petra, she doesn't really care what the outfits cost as long as they're made from natural fibers and don't employ slave labor.
If trying to deal with each other isn't enough, Charlotte is falling for Janie's twin brother, Janie is falling for Charlotte's older brother, and Petra and Melissa are dealing with family problems. Will they be able to successfully launch their clothing line, or will the whole thing come unraveled?

No matter who you are or what you wear, there's a style at Winston Prep for you. Just know that Banana Republic isn't going to earn you a high rung on the social ladder and clashing is the ultimate sin. Fashion and style aren't necessarily the same thing, but you'll never survive at Winston Prep without either one of them. It doesn't matter if you live in flip-flops or can't thread a needle. You'll want to know if the four girls' line will be in or out.

So Funny And Soooo Good!

Poseur is about four girls at a private LA high school who have to unexpectedly work together to start a fashion label. All the main characters are really fun and cool in their own way. There's the perfectly prim Charlotte Beverwil, the ghetto-fabulous Melissa Moon, the hippie goddess Petra Greene and Janie Farrish, the scholarship kid. You can imagine the drama that ensues (hint: Janie has a hot twin brother that may or may not date her enemy Charlotte!) I loved Janie the most. She's not like the typical popular high school girl. Even though she's pretty and smart, she's still insecure and that made her feel real to me.
All in all, this book is really unique. Rachel Maude's writing is so funny and addictive and way smarter than I expected. I couldn't put the book down and I actually laughed out loud (that never happens). Poseur reminds me of Clueless and Ugly Betty mixed into one. Oh, the pictures were also amazing. I read online that the author did those too...I wish I could draw AND write that well :)
I can't wait for the next book in the Poseur series to come out. If you love books about how hard, fun, and crazy it is to be in high school - pick this one up and you'll be waiting for the next one too!

Janie Farrish, Charlotte Beverwil, Melissa Moon, and Petra Greene all come from different worlds. Janie is the tall, gawky girl who never sees her true potential. Charlotte is the American girl who wishes she was French. Melissa is the gangsta who grew up in Bel Air. Petra is the pot smoking, save the animals type. Now what do these four girls have in common?
Fashion. All of them have something to do with it, whether they design it, sew it, want it, or protest it. When the students find out they must create their own special studies, Petra, Janie, Charlotte, and Melissa focus their ideas on fashion. Sadly, none of them have good enough ideas to make into a class but with all their ideas together, it might be possible.
Will four girls with only one thing in common be able to bond and create their own fashion label or will all their ideas crash and burn?
I was a little diosappointed by this book. Going into it I thought I woould love it but it wasn't what I expected. It resembles Gossip Girl with it's underage drinking and drugs, which was my least favorite part. I don't know why all books these days seem to involve underage alcohol and drug use. This is a warning for anybody who doesn't like that theme in a book.
My other complaint were the characters. All of them seemed kind of whiny, in their own separate ways. It seemed to fit into the story at parts but a lot of it seemed unneccesary.
Of course, all I have to say is not bad. Rachel Maude does a wonderful job giving all the characters their own personalities. Even the background characters who aren't seen very much are described in great detail. I was very impressed with the character descriptions and the fashion descriptions. Being all about fashion, I knew this book would go into great detail about the clothes and accessories of the characters but I was amazed at how descriptive the author got. I could picture every outfit and accessory throughout the whole book and the pictures helped too. They made the book more like a fashion journal.
In the end, the good points seem to weigh out the bad and I would recommend this for a fun summer read.
