As the Byzantine and German emperors plot war against each other, Venice's future rests in the hands of three unwilling individuals:
The newly knighted Sir Tycho. He defeated the Mamluk navy but he cannot make the woman he loves love him back. Tortured by secrets, afraid of the daylight, he sees no reason to save a city he hates.
The grieving Lady Giulietta. Virgin. Mother. Widow. All she wants is to retire from the poisonous world of the Venetian court to mourn her husband in peace. But her duty is to Venice: both emperors want her hand in marriage and an alliance with Europe's richest city. She must choose, knowing that whichever suitor she rejects will become Venice's bitterest enemy.
Lastly, a naked, mud-strewn girl who crawls from a paupers' grave on an island in the Venetian lagoon and begins by killing the men who buried her.
Between them, they will set the course of history.

Review
"Rich, inky-black atmosphere and scrupulously well though-out blend of historic and fantastic elements."―SF Crowsnest on The Outcast Blade
"Grimwood adroitly combines a satisfying complexity with visceral detail and bouts of astounding violence, knit together by suitably Machiavellian intrigue."―Kirkus Reviews on The Fallen Blade
"Sharp as a stiletto, dark and dazzling as a masquerade. Grimwood's Venice is totally compelling."―Mike Carey on The Fallen Blade

So good!
By CT
What a pleasure to read.
I was worried when I began this book that I would be lost trying to remember the first of the series, but there was no need to be - - the author weaves in reminders throughout the book. But you might reread The Fallen Blade anyway to make this one all the more sweet.
Political intrigue, complex characters good and bad, suspense, romance, action, magic, philosophy, (alt)history, monsters: it's all there. But the star, as always with JCG, is the quality writing.

Stick with "Arabesk"
By Takuan Soho
I really enjoyed the "Arabesk" series, so when I saw that Grimwood had another alternate historical fiction series, I was eager to read it. Midway through Book 2, I've been very disappointed. It reads like "Twilight," with silly 16-year-old girls mooning and swooning over dreamy vampires. The difficulties in which that the characters find themselves are akin to old-fashioned British comedies-of-errors, where if one person simply spoke up and told the truth, the entire story would be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. The characterization is rather trite, with the requisite gloomy, Byronic, moody vampire hero, the "nice girl" that he won't love in favor of the "mean girl" that he can't live without, the Machiavellian scheming "old witch" figure, and the archetypical evil, plotting uncle who wants the true princess out of the way so he can seize the throne. "Arabesk" was so much more contemplated and hard to predict; this is more of a been-there-before slog.

vampire assassin in love
By finisterre
it sounds like a winner, with bells on, because JCG can write. Still, it wasn't easy to care if any of the lead characters lived, died or achieved their goals. I found it difficult to empathise with anyone but the victims. Of which there were hundreds. There was one vampire girl that I wished well out of an oversize cast, that's it. Not for the squeamish.
