Good practical approach to evidence

The questions in this book is where its value as a didactic tool really comes through. They make you think and does not hesitate to include material from other sections forcing you to take a comprehensive approach to evidence, not just rote memorization of each rule by itself. However, the text on the rules seem have a "stream of consciousness" feel to it. I like this style of prose for reading novels but I found myself repeatedly going back over the text to get to the meaning of the section. The questions do lend some direction to the reading and if you read them ahead of time it is easier to see where the author is trying to take you. This book is very good but it cannot stand on its own, you need either a very good professor who can really teach in the classroom or a secondary source that is a bit more direct on the rules themselves like Weissenburger. Also do not waste your money on a hardcopy of the federal rules of evidence, if you are a law student you already have a westlaw and/or lexisnexis account you can use to look them up. Getting the dead tree FRE only serves as a security blanket and most textbooks (including this one) contains the relevant portions along with the related ACN's.
