A disappointing final book
By N1kita
Ok... I might not fair, but it's unavoidable that I compare this one with The High Lord book in previous series. Black Magician series final book is the one that made me love the series. Twisting and surprising plot, nice romance and bittersweet ending (well, I kinda dislike the ending but it still felt appropriate). While Traitor Queen? Gosh... It's so shallow! No real surprise, slow and dragging in some places. Well, in conclusion, it is not satisfied me. I feel something still missing when I finished read this book.
**(SPOILER ALERT)**
First, about Sonea. I know this series is not focused in Sonea solely, but she is still one of the main actor. Since the first book, I've suspected something will happen between Sonea and Regin, considering the story plot. The second book made it clear it will happen. So, I'm not surprise at all that they become lover in the end. But honestly I disappointed because the dynamic between them in becoming lover is incomplete. It feels jumping from scene to scene that left me feeling something is missing in between. And the final conclusion, 'they attracted with each other'. Attracted? Come on, others saw it as they love each other but they themselves cannot admit that much? Hmm... Anyway, compared with Sonea-Akkarin love story, Sonea-Regin felt so undeveloped.
Second, Cery scenes. It feels so slow and dragging. Just loose the tension after few scene simply because it feels repeated itself, no progress. And his end of life... oh, so sad and anticlimax. I like Cery so I feel a bit injustice for him to end so sad.
Third, Sachaka scenes wit Lorkin, the Traitors, Dannyl, Tayend etc. Now, these scenes are good, in my opinion. The pace is good, good action, enough emotion and well developed storyline. I like the way Trudi give the message that revolution itself is not enough. A lot of other things should be done to build an 'ideal' country.
All in all, this book is still enjoyable but I think Trudi can make it better than this.

A shrine to her old books...
By Amazon Customer
You know how when people have a family member die, you're careful about the amount of photos you keep, the way you keep their room, you don't want to make a shrine to a deceased family member.
Well Trudi unfortunately has made a shrine to her original Black Magician Trilogy, in which her writing has gotten laboured and painful trying to keep it going. The Black Magician Trilogy was great, but now unfortunately in the second trilogy the strength her characters once hard are failing, she seems to struggle to make any real personal development or originality with her characters. She took what was a good story, that should have been left where it was, and created three new books because she didn't want to say goodbye to them, and unfortunately the result is horrible.
While the end of the book is okay for an intermediate reader constant readers may find themselves bored with the continuous sighing Sonea displays, the amount of times Lilia chews on her lips, how often Cery displays agonising and not at all subtle self-sacrifice for his child, which of course is the normal parent reaction, but it's just so blunt, obvious and painful to read.
Trudi is a great writer whose efforts would be best spent in a new story. The original black magician trilogy was amazing, the white priestess stories were great, I can't help but feel Trudi spent too much time building a shrine instead of developing something new.

Unfortunately too short ;)
By Roman Wozniak
As always Trudi Canavan did not disappoint me, maybe a little since the book was as always too short :)
Good action, perfect characters insight, plots and twists - everything a well written book should have.
A must-read for all fantasy literature fans.
