About the Author
Jerry Pinkney is one of the most heralded children's book illustrators of all time. Absolutely amazing!

I'd agree with the previous reviewer; however, the author (Joyce Cooper Arkhurst) was indeed the person responsible for popularizing the Anansi stories here in the USA! The vocabulary in the book introduces kids to Africa and West African terms and culture. Joyce was a storyteller at the New York City Public Library many years ago and received a grant to go to West Africa to research the rich oral tradition of storytelling in the villages. This book was the first to popularize the Anansi stories and opened the door for McDermott and others. Enjoy!

This is a great book for children and adult storytellers

The author has presented a simple, easy to read format which will be easy for children to read, understand, and most important, ENJOY! The humor is wonderful. The main character, Spider, will be easily recognizable to those children already familiar with the Anansi stories. Additionally, I am a teacher and have introduced oral storytelling into my second grade classroom. These stories are simple, rich and easy to learn for those who may be interested in becoming a storyteller themselves! It's a thoroughly enjoyable and wonderful book.

This compilation of Anansi stories are just as I remembered from my childhood, very witty, funny and with good morals attached to each tale. Rather than getting separate Anansi books, having all the 'main' stories in one place makes it an easy go to for our family. A great way to introduce African folklore to young ones. An enjoyable read.

An excellent story about Honesty!

As a children's librarian, I must say I'm not fond of many series books. We are always trying to get children to read OTHER books. However, I grew up with Arthur and I do enjoy the books in his series. This is one of the best. It's an excellent story about honesty that portrays children realistically. I hear them talk to each other daily and this is how they talk about their teachers, each other, and school. This one's well worth the read!

Mahnaimi was an Israeli intelligence officer who recruited Arab agents; after his resignation from the Israeli Army in 1984, he became a left-wing journalist. Abu-Sharif helped mastermind terrorist spectaculars. Later, as Yasir Arafat's closest adviser (he has been mentioned as the PLO leader's possible successor), he supplied Mahnaimi with inside information about Arafat's growing willingness to renounce violence and recognize the state of Israel. This daring arrangement grew out of their mutual conviction that an historic compromise between Israelis and Palestinians was imperative. An excellent book written by two ex-sworn enemies

I found the book extremely interesting and enriching. At the beginning the two writers were extremely divergent, and then became slowly close in thinking and outlook. I found very interesting the parts where Uzi writes about intelligence and Shin Bet tactics, and those where Bassam talks about the revolutionary years and Wadih Haddad. Bassam and Uzi are clearly very proactive, seeing and sensing things much before other people are able to. This book, written by an Israeli and a Palestinian, is a step forward towards concensus in the Middle Eastern quagmire. Such a book would have been unthinkable of only a few years ago. It takes a strong courage to write, because the mentality of the people involved is not yet mature enough to accept peace with all the concessions it entails. The life of these two authors and men of action must be anything but a smoothly flowing river.

This is one book that any person professing to be open simply HAS to read, if they ever want to appreciate living in a multi racial society. It is rich as it is blunt, extreme as it is honest. Only if you have lived as one or the other, and wondered if you or anyone else ever were "the rightous ones", this is the way forward. It doesn't matter if you think your society is already well adapted or otherwise to differences. By exploring the extremes we consider the subtles, and this book works well to show how things we take for granted passing down to our children can only serve to reinforce long term prejudices, which will only serve to divide. READ IT!

One of the most honest books I have every read

I first read this several years ago, shortly after the September 11th attacks. No one will truly understand the hard-core terrorists until they read this book. Bassam is the perfect person to write this, having been present at many of the early meetings of the PLO and other forerunners of Hamas.

Terrorist tactics have always been present since the earliest times. Several cultures have waged terroistic campaigns of various lengths, both religious and secular. But most of them I would not equate with "true terrorism", because in early times war was how EVERYTHING spread (including knowledge, trade, enlightenment, many times even a better life for civilians). Some of them, though, I would.

You will NEVER understand that Hamas and Al-Qaida do NOT want peace in any way, shape, or reform -- only revenge -- as long as you listen to "apoligists" who insist their actions are because of U.S. and Israel policies. That's bull! Read about the earliest meetings of the forerunner of the PLO!

At some of the earliest meetings, when the United States and other countries WEREN'T EVEN INVOLVED IN THE MIDDLE EAST, the PLO literally DREAMED of terroist attacks killing thousands of INNOCENT CIVILIANS for the sole purpose of GETTING THE WORLD'S ATTENTION, BECAUSE THE FELT NO ONE KNEW OR CARED WHAT WAS HAPPENINING IN THE MIDDLE EAST while they were so busy fighting World War II!

By their own admission, they wanted to kill innocent civilians! By their own admission, it was because the rest of the world wasn't involved in the Middle East or paying any attention to it!

Once Israel became a state, they literally DREAMED of ONE DAY, FLYING A BUNCH OF JET PLANES FILLED WITH FUEL AND PASSENGERS INTO THE TALLEST BUILDINGS (of Tel-Aviv).

What I found so interesting was Bassam's transformation from a young man who just wanted to get his country back, to a cold intelligence agent waging violent battles against Israeli intelligence and even participating in an airline hijacking, to someone who finally realized -- after almost being killed by a bomb -- the horror both sides were inflicting on innocent people, and the futility and pointlessness of what he was doing.

Equally fascinating was Uzi's slow realization that the Israeli army did not always care who they hurt going after the terrorists. For example, they attacked a "convoy" that turned out to be hundreds of innocent vacationers in traffic on their way to the beach for the holiday.

Unfortunately, Bassam surmised (maybe correctly) that Yasser Arafat was not a true terrorist and secretly wanted peace. Even when he wrote this book, he thought Arafat was the key to changing the Middle East situation. Unfortunately, he misjudged Arafat's willingness to take a clear stand when confronted with threats to his life. I only vaguely remember Arafat's historic meeting with Jimmy Carter on the steps of the White House myself. According to Bassam, Arafat agreed to everything that was required by the United States for peace deal arbitration, but in his fear of PLO assassins, he was so wishy-washy in his wording of apology for terrorism that he satisfied no one.

This book was published 6 years before the September 11th attacks on civilians of the United States, and I wish many more people (especially Americans and members of NATO) had read it then. Maybe we could have prevented the attacks, maybe not.

If you know history, there are many times the Israelis have agreed to peace. Read the memoirs or histories of other U.S. presidents to get the full picture. When Israel took over the Khyber Mountain pass because the terrorists could easily see and attack many villages from there, they only agreed to a peace deal because NATO agreed to send peace-keeping forces. HOWEVER, we DEMANDED that Israel withdraw IMMEDIATELY, and then NATO NEVER SENT THE FORCES!

You want to know why Israel did not withdraw immediately from Lebanon during the recent crisis? Because they don't trust us not to lie again!

Every country criticizes Israel for not backing down, then THEY THEMSELVES don't keep their "peace-keeping" obligations, and THE CYCLE STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN!

One thing, from the beginning, that was different, was that previously when Arab conflicts ended, Middle-Eastern peoples not directly involved in the conflicts were allowed to return to their lands. But the Israelites, having suffered a massive holocost at the hands of Aldolf Hitler while their fellow citizens and neighbors allowed it, did not trust anyone. They failed to distinguish between marauding Bedoin theives in particular and all Arabs in general.

That Arabs were not allowed to return to their lands was perhaps one of the stupidest historical and tactical blunders ever made in the modern world. I would not call it evil, because Israel had no intent of suffering and revenge, they simply trusted no one. They were willing to cut themselves off from their neighbors completely. It is the stupidest thing that any modern (soon-to-be) country has ever done.

Reading this book is like reading the account of the world's biggest folly. It is truly sad, because we were so busy dealing with a much greater, stronger evil (Adolf Hitler, the murder of millions of innocent Jews, and his attempted conquest of the world).

The difference between PURE EVIL and mere retaliatory attacks is the terrorists do not even care if they solve any problem, can actually achieve realistic goals (such as security or lands returned to original families), or make life better for their people. They don't even distinguish between people who were actually displaced from their lands and all the others that have become "Palestinians" by emigrating from other Arab countries to increase the population. The Islamic terrorists want revenge for the sake of revenge -- they want to feed their pure hatred for the rest of their lives, and they think they will go to heaven if they die while killing "unbelievers". That is still the state of mind of Al-Qaida and Hamas today -- perhaps even MORE than the PLO was in the beginning!

The reason Islamic terrorists have gotten so strong, in my opinion, is they believe (correctly) that the rest of the world is too weak and has too short an attention span to commit itself to ANYTHING, MUCH LESS *REAL* PEACE.

Any other country would immediately react if they were attacked, but they criticize Israel for defending themselves after being under near-continual attack for many decades.

The worst thing NATO or anyone else can do is repeat the serious grievances they committed after arranging previous "peace deals". If they REALLY intend to stop the endless war, they MUST fulfill their commitements -- BEFORE Israel backs off. And they need to be more proactive with the offspring of terror in the rest of the world. The civilized countries of the world cannot just stand by and claim "not my problem" while Islamic terrorists involve themselves in other countries' conflicts, take over governments, attack ships, and commit holocosts. We have to stop them. The more they do, the stronger they get, and the more of them there are.

We CANNOT wait until some 3rd-world country is on the brink of total disaster (some are pretty close even now). We have to stop terrorists BEFORE countries are at that point! We have to be willing to make commitments that actually have a chance at creating lasting peace, and we have to fulfill our commitments, not just point the finger at Israel or whoever is convenient.

It is somewhat heartening to witness (in regards to the Islamic terrorist-pirates) that OTHER countries, besides the United States, are FINALLY taking a definitive action. If the world truly has the will to work together, there are more than enough countries who can split the effort to make the world a safer place, if we ALL participate. That is the key to defeating modern Islamic terrorists in the long run.

It is the only way to prevent the spread of this horror around the world, and the only way that Palestinians and the civilians of third-world countries can finally be safe and march into the modern age with the rest of us.

Super stories, well told

Have you ever wondered about the history of the mountain goat in the continental United States? Or why the rancher who is trying to decrease the coyote population on his ranch seems to only get more coyote pups? These two questions and many, many more are explained in this wonderfully written book by author Craig Childs. His usage of the English language is eloquent, to say the least. This is top-quality writing from a sharp observer who describes himself as a naturalist or adventurist.

This book is a collection of thirty-seven essays of varying lengths. They are all personal encounters covering topics from mosquitoes to bears. Most of them are reflections written about these animals in the wild, in varying locations like the Sonora Desert in Mexico, or the Yukon River. He also wrote an interesting piece about birds flying into and out of the twin beams where the World Trade Center once stood.

One of the most distinctive aspects of his style of writing is the way that he plays with words and puts them opposite words that are unusual. Here is an example from his essay on the rainbow trout that clearly shows the fun that he has in describing it. "The motions that followed the length of its body caused great momentum. It moved as if it were solid energy prepared to erupt but satisfied with remaining in one place for a short time. It was as if water had taken a concrete a form and speckled itself with lavenders and reds."

Some of the more interesting pieces of trivia were cleverly disguised in his essay on porcupines. For instance, a porcupine's digestive system is nearly a third of its body weight. Then he goes on to talk about the quills. There is a greasy layer of fatty acid that coats the quill. A researcher discovered that this substance is mostly palmitic acid, which is a strong antibiotic as effective as penicillin. This is fascinating stuff!

This book would challenge high school students to expand their vocabulary-or for anyone who enjoys animals. A fun, educational, and delightful read!

Truth is way better than fiction!

Craig Childs has taken his experiences in the wild and brought them to you, but the best part is you can do what he does on your own. He does not try and convince you that a seasoned pro such as himself is the only person to view and be viewed by the wonders of nature. Come get lost in this book and then go get lost in nature. Nothing would make the author more happy. Child's writing style has a flow and credibility to it that few other authors have. Join Craig while he serenades a coyote, scares (although by accident) a mountain lion and does his very best to help (yes help) a bull shark. Happy Reading!

Even as a child, Craig Childs was intrigued and felt an affinity with wild life. He took notes and recorded sounds as he walked the fields below the east side of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Childs is a naturalist and adventurer. In his recent book, The Animal Dialogues, he shares a few of his adventures with readers. One section of the book is dedicated to his encounters with bears. I find it fascinating that the bears seem to respect Childs and to see him as no threat. The raccoon was not so pleasant. Childs sought to help the starving animal. When deer mice became a problem, the wisest solution seemed to be a cat. The feline predator formed a "Zone of Death." Few creatures were safe, squirrels, chipmunks, birds and rabbits were his prey. Nothing was safe except the mice.

Prostate cancer killed more than 37,000 men in the U.S. in 1999, and it gets ahold of men early and often. According to autopsy reports, about 25 percent of men in their 30s have latent prostate tumors, as do more than half of men in their 60s.

However, says NBC News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Bob Arnot, research is beginning to show that this is a cancer that can be prevented or even reversed by dietary changes. The first key, he writes, is soy. America produces a lot but Americans eat very little. In countries in which soy is a dietary staple, men get prostate cancer at a fraction of the U.S. rate. (A second benefit of soy, says Arnot, is a high concentration of the amino acid tyrosine, which helps keep you alert.)

Dr. Arnot lays out a dietary plan that includes lots of soy, along with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Not coincidentally, this is also a low-fat, heart-healthy diet. Dr. Arnot says that many men are simultaneously at risk for heart disease and prostate cancer; diets rich in saturated animal fats tend to trigger both conditions.

Another benefit of Dr. Arnot's plan is that it prevents breast cancer, too, giving couples a powerful incentive to make the extreme dietary changes necessary to prevent these his-and-hers killers. And with or without the spousal incentive, Dr. Arnot says his experience with his own plan shows that men will lose weight, increase energy, and lower stress--a few valuable perks to take along on that longer, healthier life. --Lou Schuler

Arnot calls breast cancer and prostate cancer (PCa) brother-and-sister diseases. Following the success of his The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet (LJ 10/15/98), he presents his thesis that PCa is just one of a package of diseases for which we put ourselves at risk by consuming the "Western diet," characterized by high amounts of animal fats, refined flours, and sugars and little fiber and whole foods such as fruits and vegetables. In lay reader's language, Arnot explains the elements of nutritional therapy for men so that they can protect themselves against PCa. Readers are told what to eat and what not to eat, and recipes are included. In addition to diet, Arnot emphasizes healthy lifestyle habits for combating stress and discusses alternative medicine approaches to PCa. With its emphasis on staying healthy, this reference should appeal to a wide readership, especially in the light of New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani's recent cancer diagnosis.

The most important book you many ever read....

This book could very easily save your life. While it reaffirmed things I know about fiber, insulin, and exercise, it gave me a lot of new information about how to keep from getting prostate cancer (like my father had), and other important information. It also described "insulin resistance", which is something that I have and has baffeled my doctor for well over a year! Dr. Bob, thanks for writing this great book.

This is a serious step in the right direction to minimize the possibility of developing Prostate Cancer. Many volumes have been written on dealing with the disease after detection but nothing notable of taking preventive measures. This should be must reading for every man!

Great on nutrition but biased & simplistic re: surgery

This book is entertainingly and enthusiastically written and gives excellent information on how to eat to avoid prostate cancer or counteract prostate cancer--help slow or stop its growth--once you have it. I was apalled, however, at how Arnot started his chapter on "surgery," describing two groups of couples in which the men had prostate cancer. The one, happy giggling group was composed of couples where the decision was to "watch and wait" regarding the prostate cancer--in other words, not have radiation or surgery for the present. In the other group, the men had had surgery within the previous year and "These men appeared morose, even depressed. Many complained of the need to wear diapers. Months after the operation, many no longer had any sex life at all."

This picture is biased, black-and-white, unrealistic and I believe cruel to people who are trying to decide what to do about prostate cancer. Surgery IS the gold standard treatment for younger men with cancer detected early--men who might die prematurely and very painfully if they did not have surgery, which has a better than 90 percent chance of curing them. And certainly men like Bob Dole, General Schwarzkopf and thousands of others who had surgery are not morose and feeling as if their lives are over--in fact they probably feel a lot better than the 30 percent of those who watch and wait and after ten years have cancer spreading throughout their bodies.

People have to make their choices as best they can, and both watchful waiting and surgery can be appropriate. Arnot's description painting surgery as totally black was neither good journalism nor good medicine, and as the wife of a 59-year-old-man who will probably have surgery, I did not appreciate the depiction. Less than 8 percent (some say 2 pwercent) of men wear diapers after recovery from surgery and all who have surgery are certainly NOT MOROSE compare to all who wait being giddy and happy. For the fifty to thirty percent who cannot have natural erections, there are several good alternatives that will make the penis erect--and the nerves that cost erections DO NOT hinder sensation or orgasm in anyone--men may not get erect but they can feel and have orgasms! Many people take the lemons of this experience and the surgery and make lemonade, glad to be alive and have a chance at a cure. Making a blanket and untrue statement that suggests surgery leads to moroseness is neither helpful, accurate nor true. The next edition of this otherwise very good book should correct that.

Different than the movie, but still fun.

I got this because my son loves the movie, especially the dancing chick Phil. It's a cute book, but unfortunately instead of just reducing the story for a kids book they actually changed it. There's no mention of the Fred character and they changed the ending (which was one of the best parts if you enjoy watching Phil dance, and they don't even show him dancing at all :( ). Still cute, but I don't recommend it if you want something that sticks to the story. You'd probably want to get the chapter book they did for this movie instead.
