K-Gr 2-It is a good thing that the publisher chose to make this book with a glossy, sturdy cardboardlike paper because sticky little hands will be giving it a real workout. What little text there is offers a rhyming clue for readers to figure out before they set off to hunt for the answer in the picture. "Bubbles! Bubbles! In the sea! AGUA-GOOFY JUBILEE!/Search to find the honeybee!" The pages are bursting with colorful and wacky things to find, and children will pore over the pictures searching for the vampire cape, the squawking crow, or the swirled ice cream. What fun to hunt and hunt and be able to say, "Here it is!" The book ends with a rhyme and a foldout page that ask readers to start all over again and find 1 cow, 2 bicycles, 3 pigs, and so on until they reach 12 red books. The endpapers are filled with children with their noses in books, which is exactly what will happen when youngsters open this one. This clever, engaging, and fun selection is great for family sharing.-Joan Kindig, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA (c) Copyright 2010. From Booklist
From dinosaurs to flying saucers, mummies to robots, a glorious cornucopia of stuff to find hides in plain sight on the pages of this picture book. At first glance, the format is familiar to children who know Jean Marzollos I Spy series: a poem includes clues to items that appear on a colorful companion spread. Dig a little deeper, though, and more layers of fun unfold. Between the dizzying, packed scenes are quieter pages with round die-cuts that expose a few more rhyming items to find. Staakes vivid, energetic digital illustrations are brash and colorful, with a mid-century spin and a style reminiscent of J. Otto Seibolds artwork. Young viewers will want to watch for characters and objects that often reappear in incongruous vignettes (whats that ogre doing in the submarine?). A concluding foldout page offers an invitation to start over with a countdown of more things to hunt for. An ebullient, witty title that children will return to again and again. Fabulous Seek and Find
By A. Whipple
My children love books. I love books. Despite this, I have never seen both of my children love a book so quickly and so much as they love Look! A Book! We've had Look! A Book for a couple weeks now and it is still the most-read children's book in our home. Just about every day both of my children request it to be read and often spend time examining it themselves. Usually my son looks at books in his bed, but this is one book they he just loves and will look at on his own any time of day.
Look! A Book! is "A Zany Seek-and-Find Adventure." I love the big (sometimes inches big) words. Some of the pages offer peep-holes to the next page and the text is rhyming.
"Look! A bone! A cone! A pumpkin phone! A clock! A sock! A toothy croc!"
My daughter (age 4) can certainly "read" and remember text like what is above. What amazes me is that she is able to remember silly text like this, even if she just wants to sing it without the book in front of her:
"Bubbles! Bubbles! In the sea! AQUA-GOOFY JUBILEE! Search to find the honeybee!"
This large book includes illustrations about a variety of things. Inside each illustration are hidden things like pizza slices, baseballs, and, of course, books!
Things that go
Museum creatures all escape
Aqua-goofy jubilee (under the sea)
Merryworld (amusement park)
Haunted house
Treetop town (tree houses)
Personally, I love the illustrations and will be seeking out more of Bob Staake's books. My only complaint is that it has a haunted house scene in it (including a red devil). Not that I want to desensitize my children, but my 4 year old has gotten used to this scene. My 2 year old was never bothered by it. This concern would make me think carefully before giving Look! A Book! to some children.
I thank Little Brown for making fabulous books and providing Look! A Book! for review purposes.

Look! We now have two!
By P. Wu
Both my husband and I read reviews of this book and independently bought a copy each for our daughter! One we keep, of course, and the other will make some other little kid very happy come a birthday or holiday.
This is our first Staake book and now we have his two other books because they're so much fun. I think I may like them more than my kids though. The illustrations are eye catching, especially this Look! A Book! There's so much to see and find. It keeps us busy but makes bedtime reading time much too long.

Look! A Winner!
By Psyche
Finding out that Bob Staake writes, as well as illustrates, children's books more than three years after after I stopped working as a children's librarian is like showing up late to a really great party. I'm a bit annoyed that all these people have been having so much fun for so long without me, but, on the other hand, I am glad that I finally made it to the party. Had I known sooner, though, I would definitely have brought other people with me.
Look! A Book! is the perfect example of why I wish that I had discovered the weird and wonderful world that is a Bob Staake children's book earlier. The text is simple, fairly straightforward, and at times, silly; all that is great, but team that text with the brilliant, zany, cram-every-inch-with-action-on-every-page illustrations and the results are nothing short of magical. And those magical illustrations? -- they grace everything from the jacket, cover and end papers and every delightful page in between.
My son, at not quite four, seems to be the perfect age to enjoy the beautiful madness of this book. Maybe I did show up to the party at exactly the time, after all.
