It may take ingenuity to interest browsers in a memoir by a middle-aged mother who, 11 years ago, was suddenly widowed, then became a Unitarian-Universalist minister, and now works as chaplain to game wardens in Maine. But good memoir writing does not depend on celebrity or adventure—who'd have thought that a self-confessed recovering neurotic like Anne Lamott or a monastically inclined poet like Kathleen Norris would make it big?—and Braestrup's insightful essays are extraordinarily well written, mingling elements of police procedural and touching love story with trenchant observations about life and death. Alert to comic detail even in grisly circumstances (bears, for example, like to play ball with human skulls), she tells stories of lost children, a suicide, drunken accidents and a murder, always with compassion and a concern for the big questions inescapably provoked by tragic events. Why did Dad die? her children ask, and her response describes not only her theology but also her reason for being a chaplain: Nowhere in scripture does it say 'God is a car accident' or 'God is death.' After her shock subsided, Braestrup decided to follow in his footsteps and became a chaplain for the Maine Warden Service, which sets up search-and-rescue missions throughout the state. A truly memorable book

I read a library copy of this wonderful book when it was published 10 years ago and have thought about it and quoted from it more times than I can count. I was so happy to find the Kindle version as a "Daily Deal" and to reread it. It's just as good as I remember.
The author is a woman who got dealt a terrible hand. Her husband (a respected and beloved State Patrol officer)was killed in a car wreck, leaving her to raise four children aged 10 and under. In the midst of her pain and panic, she managed to keep her off-beat sense of humor and to observe and remember what brought comfort to her in grief and what DIDN'T. Her husband had planned to become a Unitarian/Universalist minister. Seeking a way to channel her need to help others, she attended seminary in his place and became chaplain to the Maine Warden Service.
It's the story of her early life and how it led her (surprisingly) to an adult life as the wife of a cop and the mother of four. It's the story of her husband's death and how she refused the role of "plucky widow" and how she and her children went on living - never forgetting the man who had been so important to them, but finding ways to cope and to honor his memory.
It's also the story of a group of law enforcement officers who remain quietly in the background until disaster strikes. At that time, they become the most important people in the world. We think of game wardens as lucky folks with stress-free jobs who get to spend all day communing with nature. In reality, they spend most of their time dealing with people and there are some rough customers out in the woods. It is statistically one of the most dangerous law enforcement jobs in the world and they wear guns and body armor for a reason. They also coordinate search and rescue missions. Some end well; others end in tragedy. It's a stressful job that's frequently heart-breaking. Kate's role is to listen and comfort worried parents, grieving spouses, and the wardens who can't always leave the job behind when they go off duty.
This is a beautifully written, thought provoking book by a woman you wish you could have for a friend. If you haven't read it, you should.

Loved the book

The author spoke truth in a most poignant manner. As a Law Enforcement Chaplain I could relate to so much of what she wrote about. Inspiring to note that she has her finger on the pulse both what is and what is yet to come. Loved the book.

If God Was a Maine-iac...

At its foundation, HERE IF YOU NEED ME asks the timeless question: Why? Why does God stand by indifferently while bad things happen to good people? Kate Braestrup brings the abstract musings to concrete reality as she chronicles her sometimes unenviable tasks as a chaplain to the Maine Warden Service. Is there any sense to the deaths she witnesses (after the fact) in the Maine woods, lakes, ponds, and streams? People from Maine are affectionately called "Mainiacs," but Braestrup defends the very God many others question in this book. That defense, along with the mix of upbeat and heartrending real-life stories she shares, make the book worth a trip upstream.
Braestrup doesn't kid herself. By the end of the book, she admits to many paradoxes, including her own. Only through the tragedy of losing her own husband, a state trooper with a dream of becoming a minister, does she herself follow that path and become a chaplain with the Warden Service (a vocation she comes to love). If nothing else, Life -- some might say God -- is ironic. Still, Braestrup would insist, He is love as well.
Perhaps less successful is her blending of abstract, theological questions with rather frank descriptions of the body human (both alive and dead). But there are those who would argue, with some degree of truth, that this is exactly her point -- humans make a fetish of the body at the expense of the soul. Her mission, then, is to bring the corporeal down to size. The trouble? If that sort of thing bothers you, the going may get rough despite all the philosophical smelling salts along the way.
Overall, a worthy effort. Fine writing and an honest voice overcome the sometimes disconcerting jumps of this episodic memoir to create a work that should please both fans of religion and fans of the outdoors. Recommended.
