Travels with Darryl Caterine

A zany, entertaining, and profound journey across the United States over the course of several years to unfamiliar places for those of us content with our lot. Lilly Dale? Roswell? Killington and then Royalyon VT. Why is Caterine chasing down folks who believe in the paranormal? Surely this scholar could use his time to pursue more profound matters. But he is a trickster; Caterine's goal is not to commune with figures in the past or buddy up to extraterrestials but to turn his lens on the unconscious needs of those who wish to. He uses his vast knowledge of world religions sparingly, applying the right amount of insight not to overwhelm us with his knowledge but to gently unmask the charlitan. Who is the alien? Caterine seems to suggest that we are; we are disconnected from nature and from our sad history by virtue of America's denial of death. The meaning of the word "religion" is discovered in its root: our word for ligament..."bound together." This is what seems lacking in traditional religion; we need to be reconnected with Nature and with one another.

Haunted by unknown, unknowable Others

In this lively and informative book, Darryl Caterine takes his readers on a road trip to several locations in the United States where people gather together to share their passions and practices related to phenomena that defy rational explanation. He travels to Lily Dale, on the shores of Lake Erie, where mediums and channellers gather to converse with spiritual entities and each other; to Roswell, Arizona, where ufologists and alien abductees gather to exchange secrets about unidentified flying objects and far flung galaxies; and to Killington, Vermont, where members of the American Society of Dowsers gather to find water, lost objects, and answers to their questions.
As an ethnographer and scholar of religion, Caterine's aim is not to determine whether the "paranormal" phenomena he pursues are "real" or "true," but rather, to explore the role that beliefs and practices concerning these phenomena play in the lives of those who engage them. What he finds in each case is a distinctly American concern with the nature of Nature.
As Caterine reminds us, the Ground on which the United States was founded and whose innocence and beauty we aspire to uphold is a world whose peoples and cultures our ancestors violently erased in order to begin (again). As he suggests, it is the lingering effects of this originary trauma that animate people's fascination with the paranormal. In attempting to contact the dead, communicate with extraterrestrials, or uncover the ley lines of the earth, people are looking to connect with "Nature" in a way that will afford them some comfort, orientation, and companionship--some sense of where they are and who they are--in the face of unknown, unknowable Others.
Along the journey, Caterine is an able and amiable companion. As he moves across the surface of the United States, he not only offers historical snapshots of the places he visits, he too has experiences that defy rational explanation, even as he exposes other instances of fraud and deception. He too is searching for a sense of where he is. His experiences and reflections upon them serve to unsettle readers' sense of what counts as real, normal, and natural, calling into question the "normalcy" of our own beliefs and practices, as well as the theories and methods we use to study them.
This book is an excellent read for scholars and students of religious studies, American culture, and American history, as well as general readers interested in how normal our fascination with the paranormal actually is.

Hallowed ground

This book was more than I expected. Thought it would be like "Weird New Jersey." But this book is quite thoughtful and respectful, with beautiful themes. A core idea is that the land we live on is still inhabited by the spirits of that which came before. And slowly, beautifully, the author takes us there and provides a few introductions. Recommended.
